Ye Olde Greenpoint Of Yore: Manhattan Avenue
Filed under: Area 51
This is one of a number of nifty old Greenpoint pictures I acquired recently. In light of the heated rhetoric, chest pounding and mud-slinging that we are being subjected to leading up to this year’s election I thought it would be nice throw out a little something we Brooklynites can all an agree upon.

Perhaps it is just me, the advent of spring or our troubled economy but people seem to be a little more gruff and pugnacious than usual. Even for New York Shitty.
I mention this because when I glanced at the above poster at Greenpoint Avenue stop of the G yesterday I found yet another indicator of the pervasive surliness shrouding our fine city.
You know we are living in troubled times when even the saintly George Clooney is getting guff.

Public Service Announcement
Once in a very blue moon I learn something so disturbing I feel compelled to pass it along because it is in the public’s interest. Before I continue I want to make it clear that it is not the purpose of this post to rumor monger. I will recount the facts I have been provided and you can draw your own conclusions.
A month ago a good friend of mine who worked in the deli at the above depicted establishment started getting red spots on her skin. These coincided roughly with a new vendor providing the deli’s chicken. Thinking it was merely due to one of the many things that lurk in uncooked chicken she took extra care to wipe down the counters, utensils, etc. It was all to no avail: the red spots persisted.
Concerned, my friend brought this to her supervisor’s attention. She also pointed out that she was not the only person afflicted with these lesions: five out of seven of her coworkers displayed similar symptoms. Her input was summarily dismissed. After some cajoling on my part my friend finally visited a physician. His prognosis was as follows:
SCABIES
Needless to say my friend underwent treatment and quickly found another job. As I said at the beginning of this post, these are the facts as I know them. I will leave it to you, dear readers, to take heed or dismiss this cautionary tale as you see fit.

P.S.: Lest any of you are wondering what healing scabies lesions look like. Here you go!

Although I have spent most of my childhood in the southwest (and have years of high school and college Spanish lessons under my belt) I will attempt to give a translation of the above (with some help):
There is not place in this world; our world (is) for prejudice of any type.
Very true.

Crosstown Local Cavalcade X: Pick Your Poison
Filed under: Area 51
Sure some of you might find this offensive but there are much worse things one can be subjected to in our subway system than color commentary about Carrie Fisher’s cleavage.
Like this, for example. I have lived in New York Shitty for over ten years. During the aforementioned decade I have seen some seriously nasty shit— hell, I have even used the Washington Square Park bathroom— but money shots of someone’s deformed feet? Does the MTA really hate its ridership enough to inflict this upon us? I guess they do.
Maybe this is some clever ploy to discourage people from using mass transit, e.g.; if the ridership of the Crosstown Local goes down they won’t have to improve service? First a fare hike and now this. I shudder to think what the evil wizards at the MTA have up their sleeve next. Bursting boils? Chancre removal? Colostomy can cleaning services?
This isn’t to suggest this subway poster cannot be amusing under the right circumstances. My buddy Lisa discovered one such instance recently.
Talk about product placement. Welcome to where American art stands today: 1-877-Bunion-1.

TOMORROW: TGE Power Plant Hearing
As noted by my colleague over at the Gowanus Lounge, tomorrow the State Siting Committee will tender the much-anticipated decision regarding TGE’s proposed power plant. Those of you who cannot make the trek to Albany tomorrow but would like to make it known to our friends upstate that you do not want a power plant on Bushwick inlet can make your voice heard. Per an email I received from the Open Space Alliance:
New York State still has not denied the application to build a 1,100 megawatt power plant on our Williamsburg/Greenpoint Brooklyn waterfront!
The Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA) is grateful to GWWTF, GWAPP, NAG, other local groups and our local electeds for leading the fight against TGE’s power plant for more than six years. OSA supports the plan to build a public park on this waterfront site, not a power plant.
Let us know if you want to join us for the hearing on Thursday, March 20th at 1:30 in Albany. And if you can’t join us in Albany:
Anyone who is interested in making the journey to Albany tomorrow should contact OSA at:

Brooklyn Blogfest III Needs Your Help!
Okay. I’ve got a tentative booking at the Brooklyn Lyceum for May 8th. Trouble is, they won’t pencil it in (cause they’re kind of jerky about that) and I have to give them $600 to cover the entire cost (which is $100/per hour) of space rental from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m if they’re going to hold it for us. NOW.The Lyceum, it seems to me, is a perfect location, literally right on top of the R-train. It’s big, they’ve got a stage, A/V equipment, etc. It’ll be fairly easy to do food there, etc. I think it’s sort of perfect. And it’s on the new fourth Avenue (after party at the Holiday Inn Express – just kidding). Maybe Canteen wants to cater. Anyway, all good. I was going to go ahead and do that but finances are a little wobbly right now. Does anyone want to help me pay for it. They will be reimbursed after the Blogfest. How should we do this?
Indeed, how should WE do this? Anyone who is interested in helping make Brooklyn Blogfest III happen can contact me at:

NEXT WEEK: Sock Monkey Fun For A Cause
Next week the fresh art sewing circle will be meeting for another evening of sock monkey making for a good cause. Those of you who are not familiar with fresh art here’s an excerpt from their mission statement:
The mission of fresh art, a non-profit organization, is to provide expanded artistic, personal development, and entrepreneurial opportunities to New York City artists with special needs. We are also dedicated to enhancing public awareness of these artists’ talents and concerns, their agencies’ work, and on the use of art as a tool for healing, growth, and positive change.
Not only have I heard from a reader who attended one of these sewing circles that it was a lot of fun, but they have a number of exciting art shows slated for this spring. You can get a sneak peek by clicking here.
