From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Diamond Street Crime Prevention Tip

This site— and the north Brooklyn blogosphere in general— has been abuzz with much talk about crime lately. First there was the robbery/shooting at 93 Nassau Avenue. Then I received word of a botched robbery attempt on Montrose Avenue. Just this weekend I learned via the North Brooklyn Community Group a rash of car break-ins have come to pass around McGolrick Park.

What am I to do, you ask? Well, someone on Diamond Street has devised a rather novel (and inasmuch as I can ascertain: yet to be tested) approach to crime prevention in the Garden Spot.

I will let a lass named Nicole (who brought the above to my attention) tender an explanation:

So I stayed up way too late last night watching Twin Peaks, this morning in a stupor I’m going to get coffee at Brooklyn Standard and I look up to see this, a stuffed white wolf in someone’s window!  It’s huge!  And terrifying!  It’s on Diamond between Nassau & Norman.  And it wasn’t an Agent Cooper-induced hallucination!  Also note the guard dog signs everywhere….

The pictures aren’t so great because I felt really weird about photographing the inside of someone’s apartment….

Observation: there’s a lot more to feel weird about here than merely photographing the interior of someone’s apartment. Genius. Pure genius. God bless you, Greenpoint!

Greenpoint Fashion Watch: A Splash of Color

This morning yours truly got up bright and early to take a walk. Heatwave be damned. I make such sacrifices for my readership.

I was quickly rewarded for my perseverance when I met the above lass. Her name is Liz and I found her fashion sense quite stunning.

I asked her if she made the above necklace (which as you will note includes an abacus:  this appealed to my inner nerd in a big,  big way). She answered to the negative;  she found it while working at a second-hand store and was immediately smitten. This is understandable for a number of reasons— especially since (as I later learned) she is a fashion designer. You can (and should) view Liz’s work by clicking here. It’s seriously fun stuff!

A Bedford Avenue Mystery Solved!

Anyone who has lived in Williamsburg for any appreciable period of time knows this place well. Those who don’t (READ:  tourists) love it too. It is located at Bedford Avenue and North 1 Street and is a much-needed breath of levity in the downright affluenzic mecca which Williamsburg has become. I,  as many others,  have often wondered who has taken over this menagerie since Luis Rivera died. Well folks,  I have some very good news:  last night I got the answer!

Her name is Carmen and I stumbled upon her locking the gate after adding wreaths bearing eggs to the current display. She didn’t care to be photographed (which I attribute more to a language gap than secrecy) but she told me that she is the current “custodian” of this ever-unfolding creation and its future is uncertain. Apparently Luis Rivera’s cousin (or nephew— I forget which) wants to operate a flea market in this space.

Nonetheless she is soliciting donations for  “Coco”  the Gorilla to get new clothes. Those of you who care to do so can do this in person on Saturdays (when she has assured me she is on the premises) or next door at 270 Bedford Avenue (AKA:  Monsignor Alexis Jarka Hall Senior Housing) which Carmen calls home!

New York Shitty Day Ender: Sartorial

When I saw this dapper chap at the intersection of Franklin Calyer Street this afternoon I had to capture his amazing sense of style for posterity. Note the Jack Daniel’s belt bucket and headgear. Magnificent!
