From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Very Special Reader Request

A woman we’ll call “J” writes:

Miss Heather, Great postings on the NewYorkShitty website! My mother and uncle were born 70+ years ago in Greenpoint and spent most of their childhood on the 3rd floor of 147 North 7th Street. Next time you are in that area, would you please be so kind as to take a picture of that building now? That would be such a great surprise for them! Most appreciated…

we dialogued a bit and “J” added:

They also went to the Russian Orthodox church on N 12th… I know it (147 N0rth 7 Street— Ed. Note) will be nothing as they remembered. I could not find any pics on realtor sites (the building sold in 2010 for $990,000) or Google, so my fingers are crossed!!!

I’ll be perfectly honest: when I headed down North 7 Street I my heart sank. Especially when I figured out the infamous “finger” building (which, as many recall, was truncated from 20 stories to 10) graced the block in question:

But 147 North 7th Street still stands— albeit in the shadow of its rather “big” friend.

Here it is!

And the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration is (still) splendid as always!

This post is for you and yours, “J”!

Greenpoint Halloween Watch: 97 Russell Street Represents!

That’s right folks: the Halloween decorating (courtesy of a wonderfully sweet lady named Beverly) has begun.

It’s looking good!

Ghoulishly good!

As happenstance would have it, I bumped into the head of the 94th himself, Deputy Inspector Hurson, just around the corner on Driggs Avenue. I asked him if he had checked out this display. He had not. However, he did state that he had checked out 648 Humboldt Street. He was impressed— and rightfully so!

I took a moment to tell the folks responsible for this ever-growing display that I really liked the “day care” tableau (as seen above) and the girl in the pink dress reminded me of Courtney Love. They found this quite amusing— but added with a wink that this year might be their final run. I suspect I speak on the behalf of a number of north Brooklynites when I write:

Say it isn’t so!

To be continued…?

Spotted On Manhattan Avenue: Beauty!

It would appear she found her way back home! I suppose a hard-working gal at needs to cut lose on a Saturday occasionally.

Greenpoint Photos du Jour: It Has Begun!

That’s right folks, 648 Humboldt Street has commenced work on one of— if not THE most— BAD ASS Halloween house in Greenpoint! Follows are some highlights from yesteryear to get everyone in the Halloween spirit.

Boo!

Spotted On Manhattan Avenue: Great Wall Of Beer

I know what you’re thinking, gentle readers:

How “great” can this wall possibly be?

It is nothing short of breath-taking, my fellow Garden Spotters. We’re talking at least thirty solid feet of suds. Do go and behold the Greenpoint glory for yourselves— you will not be disappointed!
