This Is Awesome!

One of the benefits of being a pack rat and a wee bit lackadaisical with the house keeping is when you finally DO get around to organizing it feel likes Christmas. There’s a treat under every pile of old magazines, old books, etc. This was certainly the case this weekend. Which brings me to the pile of old negatives gracing the beginning of this post: I have had these for months— but alas my scanner cannot process them. Until I exercised a little ingenuity, that is. Then I got a real treat; something so utterly nifty I simply had to share it!

Snapshots of the 1939 World’s Fair!

This negative was in pretty bad shape, yet I really like the finished image. Very moody.

I’m a big fan of this family unit. “Grandma” looks like one tough character.

There are twelve photographs in total. You can see them on my Flickr page by clicking here. By all means do check them out. They’re an incomparable sneak peek into the New York City of yesteryear!

P.S.: There are many, many more old pix (of New York City!) where these came from so stay tuned. You’re in for are real treat!

Filed under: Bushwick, Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City, Queens, Williamsburg

A reader named Amanda passed this along to me and I, in turn am going to pass it along to you as it sounds very interesting

In partnership with the Newtown Creek Alliance, HabitatMap invites you to participate in a community mapping workshop at LaGuardia Community College on the evening of Monday, October 20th from 6:30-8:30… At the Newtown Creek Neighborhoods Community Mapping Workshop participants will:

  • discover how web-based tools can magnify the impact of community organizing campaigns;
  • hear from experienced organizers who have been active in the Newtown Creek Neighborhoods for decades; and
  • learn how to navigate and mine city, state, and federal databases for information relevant to their own personal health and the health of their families and communities.

Participants should come prepared to begin mapping their neighborhoods so bring any relevant documents and photos but most importantly, bring your ideas.

Location:
The Newtown Creek Neighborhoods Community Mapping Workshop will be held at LaGuardia Community College, building E, room 228… The entrance to building E is located at 31-10 Thomson Ave. between 31st St. and Van Dam St.

Sick Of Williamsburg?

October 7, 2008 ·
Filed under: Area 51, Queens, Williamsburg

If so an oasis beckons you at the Jackson Street stop of the B43. Only 10% down, no board approval.

The catch: it’s in Kew Garden Hills Flushing. Where the heart of Queens is purported to beat.

Who can argue with this?*

Miss Heather

*Queens Crap hopefully. I eagerly anticipate his take on “Kew Gardens Hills”! Whatever the fuck that is. Is it like “East Williamsburg”, Crappy? Enquiring minds want to know!

A Very Special Pay Phone du Jour

September 21, 2008 ·

This pay phone hails from Liberty Avenue in Ozone Park and comes courtesy of Kevin Walsh of Forgotten New York. I’m not too sure which saint this is (I call him St. Detritus of Queens County) but he should head down to Court Square. There he will find a pay phone in dire need of divine intervention.

This found its way into my inbox yesterday and I feel compelled to pass it along. I have it on good intelligence that this cruise will indeed feature Greenpoint’s very own shit creek. Those of you who wish to learn more about the Citizens Union (and you should —it looks very interesting) will be directed to their home page by clicking here.

This is a quick reminder that this Saturday, September 6, the Sunnyside Shorts Film Festival will be taking place at the Sunnyside Gardens Park in (care to guess) Sunnyside, Queens.

The show starts at sunset (approximately 8:00 p.m.) and early arrivers will be treated to “traditional harp music” courtesy of Donie Carroll, Dan Neely and members of The Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra. This event is absolutely free and you can get more details by clicking here.

P.S.: For those of you looking for a little something to quaff tonight Dandy Wine will be hosting another tasting right here in Greenpoint. Here are the deets per the email I received this morning:

My girl Melissa will be here pouring three lovely wines, all from different regions and different varieties, but all wonderful just the same.  Here is the line-up for FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th, 2008:

1.  MARTIN CODAX, ALBARINO 2006, RIAX BAIXAS, SPAIN (Martin Codax was a 13th century Galician troubadour, whose romantic works spoke of the inherent beauty of the Spanish countryside and coast.  The name     was given to the winery that produces this refreshingly dry Albarino.  Tart on the tongue, with nice round juicy fruits of citrus, peach, and pear! Yummmm.) $13

2.  GHOST PINES, CHARDONNAY 2006, CALIFORNIA (This is a winemaker’s blend; sourcing the best fruit from Sonoma, Napa, and Monterey counties.  Flavors of baked apples, crisp pear, and creamy oak.) $19

3.  GASCON, MALBEC 2007, MENDOZA ARGENTINA (Since 1884, Gascon has been recognized for the rich, smooth flavors that come from this high altitude vineyard situated along the Cordillera of the Andes Mountains.  Full-bodied and elegant, this Malbec has layers of blackberry, blueberry, dark cherry and mocha.  Perfect wine for FALL!!!) $14

If you missed last week’s tasting due to travel, apathy, or lack of email, you must come for a visit and drink some wine, eat some cheese, and meet your fellow Greenpointers!  All the cool kids are doing it…  it’s the best happy hour in town!

We’ll be pouring wine from 6 PM – 9 PM.  Hope to see you there.  We are located at 153 Franklin Street between India and Java in beautiful Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

And if you can’t make it to the tasting, be sure to drop by soon, we have a lot of new wine to check out.

Long Island City Photos du Jour: Angry At The MTA

August 28, 2008 ·
Filed under: Long Island City, Queens

Lest this or this post has not made it clear: certain parts of Long Island City are rather— how shall we say— colorful. This goes double for 28 Street. For those of you who are not in the know, this is where the Q101 bus begins its journey to Riker’s Island. It has been my experience that there are always interesting people to be found on this street. And being the very interesting people they are, they often have rather interesting things to say.

And sometimes they even see fit to air their views on garbage cans.

I have no idea what this missive is about other than its author appears to have a beef with the MTA (and “white men”). Join the club, kiddo.

Long Island City Photos du Jour: Welcome To Queensbridge

August 27, 2008 ·
Filed under: Long Island City, Queens

I found an incredibly wild mural just across the street from the 59th Street Bridge recently and simply HAD to share it here. Ready to see some seriously fierce stuff? Here we go!

Meet the Wall Nuts.

I’m not going to lie: I have always found this part of Queens incredibly seedy. It is not a place I would like to find myself at 2:00 or 3:00 o’clock in the morning.

But my concern was always with the ladies of the evening and ex-cons trolling the area. I never knew Satan himself called this neighborhood home.

This blond beauty really took me by surprise. If you cannot shake the feeling you have seen this lovely face before, chances are you have. Click here for the reveal!

Crapped And Tapped

August 27, 2008 ·
Filed under: Bed-Stuy, Bum Shit, Dung of the Day, Long Island City, Other Shit, Queens

I have a predilection for documenting shit: be it human, canine or sub-standard construction. I also have a fascination for public pay phones rendered useless by human abuse. But alas of late I have become jaded.

This paltry specimen from Bed Stuy didn’t impress me. The receiver is gone, someone lost his shirt, yada, yada, yada

I wanted MORE.

I got it...

courtesy of Queensboro Plaza. I can’t honestly say I will miss this eyesore. But the construction fences demarcating what is arguably one of the UGLIEST BUILDINGS in New York City leaves much to the imagination…

and the incontinent. It reeks.

Note the happy people gracing this pay phone kiosk. They’re all “thumbs up”— not unlike our fearless leader. Neither they nor King George the Second (fighting the war on terror overseas) would want to pick up— much less use— the phone contained therein.

Which is worse: a crapped phone* or a tapped phone? Go to Queens Plaza and figure it out for yourself.

Miss Heather

*That is shit. Trust me. How the hell they got it ON the phone is beyond me.
