New York Shitty Slide Show du Jour: Manhattan Selections
Yesterday the Mister and I made a late afternoon trek to Manhattan. It had been a good while since I had knocked around 14th Street. Boy has it changed! Follows is a mini slide show of some of the more noteworthy items I saw while pounding around the East and West Village and places in between. Enjoy!
On that note, I’m off to enjoy this lovely day. If what I have heard is true it will almost the 70 degree mark. The heat at Chez Shitty is on full blast and we once again have no hot water.
Just felt like sharing. More later.

I found the above at the Van Dam Street yesterday. Needless to say I found its use (abuse) of grammar amusing. Upon closer inspection I found a nugget of Greenpoint goodness.
BROOKLYN VAULT LIGHT CO. 262 Monitor St. Brooklyn, N.Y.
It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten my Greenpoint geek on. Today I did. Here’s what 262 Monitor Street looks like nowadays.
To say the least I was disappointed.* But I did find a few nifty items about Brooklyn Vault Light Company online. Here they are:
The above hails from the 120th Volume of American Architect. It would appear that I have stumbled upon a state-of-the-art coal hole cover! By 1921 standards, anyway.
This classy piece of correspondence comes courtesy of Glassian.org.
And last, but hardly least, what would a piece of Greenpoint history be without a lawsuit? Involving high society, no less! From the March 13, 1921 edition of the New York Times:

*There are no sidewalks to speak of on Monitor between Greenpoint Avenue and Norman Avenue. Just a bunch of pot holes and a bunch of parked/idling cars mostly. Northside Car Service seems to be particularly fond of parking/hanging out on the “sidewalk” in this area.

Did you know Mike Bloomberg is running for mayor? If the numerous fliers and callers/hipster hitters of buzzers didn’t remind you of this fact maybe my answering machine (and inbox) will!
Just 24 more hours, dear readers, and it will be over.

Christina writes (in an email entitled “An Offer You Cannot Refuse”):
Go ahead, admit it…you know you want him!
You know, I have procrastinated coloring my hair because I simply cannot make up my mind. This may very well be the deal maker: clearly blondes do have more fun!* In Harlem, anyway.

*Or not. It has been brought to my attention that this solicitation has since been annotated.
Why can’t we all just get along?

Yesterday upon learning the horrible news about the rape which came to pass at Nassau Avenue and Diamond Street earlier this week I posted it here on New York Shitty to make you, dear readers, aware. Later in the day I was reminded (by buddy d of pointgreen) of a service unescorted women (and many more— as I learned) out late at night can and should use. It is called RightRides and I am going to dedicate this post to giving you the 411 about this organization.
To get the ball rolling, here’s an excerpt from their “About” page to give you a general idea of their mission:
The mission of RightRides For Women’s Safety, Inc. is to build safer communities by ending gender-based harassment and sexual assault. We work towards this by community organizing and offering direct service, safety education and advocacy programs.
In our RightRides program, we offer women, LGBTQ and gender nonconforming individuals a free, late-night ride home to ensure their safe commute to or through high-risk areas.
In our Safe Walk program, we offer walking escorts for any one who doesn’t want to walk alone.
We are also a founding member of New Yorkers for Safe Transit, which will pursue coalition building and policy change work to increase safety in mass transit…
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Very simple: if you are out and about Friday and/or Saturday night (11:59 p.m. – 3:00 a.m.) and am in need of a safe ride (or escort) home you call either of these two telephone numbers
- (718) 964-7781
- (888) 215-7233 (SAFE)
and they will dispatch a driver to pick you up. CAVEAT/POSSIBLE CATCH: your person and destination must be within their “service area”. Follow are their service maps for Friday and Saturday.
SATURDAY
As you can see I have not included the key for this map. This is because it is too extensive for me to screencap and publish here. You can view this map (along with the key) by clicking on the above image or clicking here.

New York Shitty Day Starter: The Word On The Street
Filed under: Manhattan
The word on First Avenue (across the street from Stuyvesant Town) is “RAH RAH” is an asshole. He (or she) also appears to be from Queens. This is interesting given the “314” exchange hails from Brooklyn. Hmm…

New York Shitty Day Ender: Miss Heather Does A Good Deed
Today, dear readers, I did something I rarely do: go to the movies. This much-needed bit of recreation entailed me doing something else I do not do very often: going to Manhattan. Murray Hill, no less. (What can I say? I find Woody Harrelson brandishing firearms irresistible.)
Anyhoo, after deciding in favor of getting a little walking in I got off at the 1st Avenue stop of the L. As I proceeded further north I began to realize I was not in Greenpoint anymore. I felt uncomfortable. People were staring at me. Thankfully, at 24th Street I saw something that made me feel right at home.
As you are all too aware I have a “thing” for pay phones. I cannot pass one without looking at it. The above example was no exception.
Incoming ordnance at twelve o’ clock!
Crikey, Verizon took a direct hit!
After I took the above photograph a livery cab pulled up beside me and a 40-something gentleman made a bee line for this telephone.
Me: Dude!
40-something Gentleman: (picks up receiver)
ME: DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!
40-sG: (turns around)
Me: Don’t use that pay phone! Someone took a shit on it!!!
40s-G: (slowly turns around and, after noticing that someone has indeed despoiled said pay phone, let’s it slide from his hand.)
Me: That’s why I was taking photographs of it. SOMEONE SHIT ON IT!
40s-G: Thank you! Thank you! (starts heading back to livery cab)
Me: No problem. Do me a favor, okay?
40s-G: What?
Me: Please wash your hands as soon as you can, okay? I mean, someone SHIT on that phone. God only knows what else is on there we can’t see.
40s-G: I will, thank you!
With that closing remark and the slam of a cab door he was on his way. And I was on mine. Which brings me to what I found two blocks later.
Miss Heather
P.S.: I felt so good about my good deed today I decided to make a little detour and purchase myself a treat!
That’s right, kids. Project: Boobification is back! Methinks I’ll name the left one “Bill” and the right one “Mike”!
