As spotted during today’s perambulations around Sunnyside and Long Island City. It is a little hard to decipher but there more going on here than meets the eye. Let’s go in for a closer look, shall we?
Someone has seen fit to add “The Queens Way”. I’ll leave it to you, gentle readers, to ascertain exact what constitutes spreading love the “Queens way”. In any case, I found this discovery downright uncanny given a snow globe I am working on presently.
I do not think I need to state who a couple of the “key players” in this globe are— but I’ll go ahead and link to this and this anyway. This one’s for you Crappy.

As spied on Essex Street. While I am on the subject, I would like to give a shout out to Curtis & Kuby’s Facebook page. Today the latter was kind enough to share my “product”!. I quickly discerned this when I received an inquiry. It goes as follows:
Please tell me the stop & frisk snowglobe is a real product. How does one go about acquiring one or two?
I have assured this gentleman that this snow globe is quite real. Nevertheless, the latter is an excellent question. One quite frankly I had not pondered. This in large part because I have so much darned fun making these bad boys (and girls). In any case, here’s the deal:
- Inasmuch as I would like to do a flat rate price by size (of globe), the fact of the matter is some are more costly to make in terms of material and labor than others. Thus…
- they will be priced accordingly and on a case by case basis.
- Anyone interested in purchase a snow globe should contact me via email at: missheather (at) newyorkshitty (dot) com. Please be sure to indicate which one you are interested in.
- All transactions and donations (Yes, I have had folks ask if they can help finance this venture) will be conducted via PayPal. My account is the previously listed email address.
- I suppose it would be helpful if a provided a link to my “product”. This photo set shows what I have created, what I am presently working on, the “process” in all its fun and frustration. I update it on a fairly regular basis— so check back periodically!
Presently I am working on a snow globe which explores the phenomenon of “indecent exposure” and how technology (smart phones in particular) has shifted the “balance of power” so to speak from the “flasher” to the “flashee”. This seems to have resulted in more responsiveness to this kind of thing from our constabulary. As you can see, gentle readers this chap is exposing himself to mixed reactions from his “audience”. Two have elected to run away, one is reading him the riot act and another is calmly documenting it on her smart phone (from hence it will undoubtedly find its way onto the Internet).
On the “to do” list:
- Occupy Wall Street: I suspect this will be a series.
- This guy.
- Alec Baldwin getting arrested for bicycling down Fifth Avenue the wrong way.
I think we can all agree this needs to happen. In closing (and on a related note) I would like to give a shout out to this rather nifty endeavor which is presently on view in Long Island City.

Although I am totally certain Frank Jump has already covered this (because he has a Jedi master sense of such things), I am linking to his wonderful blog anyway. I want to give a shout-out of gratitude to the fellow working on this site who humored my shutter-bugging. He totally understood how ironic this was given Equal Pay Day came to pass just a week ago…

New York Shitty Video & Photos Du Jour: On The Waterfront
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City, Long Island City Queens, Newtown Creek
Today since the weather is amenable, I decided to see what’s happening in far north ‘Point. After revisiting my favorite urban artifact (as seen above, she can be found on Commercial Street not terribly far from the kitty condoplex) I swung over to the Manhattan Avenue Kayak Launch.
First, I encountered this. I do not know when this happened. But it did.
I was stunned at how many boats were moored, illegally I’ll add, on the Queens side of the creek. I have it on excellent intelligence that yes, some of these boats are being pressed into service as residences. Residences on Newtown Creek. Please take a moment to mull this one over, gentle readers.
I do know when this happened: June 9th, 2013. As you can see it has yet to be repaired. No one seems to know if, much less when, this will come to pass. That seems to be the “Greenpoint Way” nowadays.
I was rather distressed to see this: a tree in a clear state of distress. Onward I walked.
No exploration of the utter absurdity that is the Greenpoint waterfront is complete without a visit to the North Brooklyn Boat Club.
Lest any of you are wondering what this is, it is the “Ed Shed”. The “NBBC” (via Open Space Alliance North Brooklyn— remember the latter handles money for the previous) secured a $25,000 grant for this educational facility. Yes, you just read me correctly. This structure will feature a “Sewer In A Suitcase”, material/date about water quality and various art projects for the edification of school groups.
I found this rather large vessel moored to the west curious— but not as curious as…
this one which is affixed to the premises of the Department of Transportation directly under the Pulaski Bridge. Is this legal? No, it probably is not. While we’re on the subject of questionable legality, 51 Ash Street (the premises of the North Brooklyn Boat Club and the new location of the Greenpoint Boathouse) appears to have an al fresco kitchen…
… replete with a barbecue pit…
and “kitchen sink”.
Note that this fixture does appear to be fully functional— and begs a number of questions:
- Where is the water coming from? (Educated guess: 49 Ash Street).
- Were the proper permits filed to do this? (Educated guess: No.)
- How is it that an “educational facility” located on private property (which is under lock and key) can receive a $25,000 grant (and assistance from our local parks conservancy group) and public park whose fence was seriously damaged ten months ago is seemingly not worthy of attention— much less the funding— required to conduct repairs and routine maintenance?
Anyone?
