This lovely lady was found Sunday morning running in McCarren Park. If this is your dog please call (646) 522-2022. Hopefully she will be claimed by her owners very soon because she is a super sweet dog. But if her owners are not found soon she will be put up for adoption. She is good around people, dogs and cats.

Please call the number above for more information.

I found this flier outside the Broadway stop of the G train last weekend and feel compelled to pass it along. RightRides offers “safe walks” to Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, Williamsburg, Fort Greene and Greenpoint Friday nights between 11:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. It is a service definitely worth checking out if you happen to be out late and feel reluctant to walk home alone. All you need to do is call 1-866-977-WALK and they’ll do the rest!

For more information about RightRides (including their service area, hours and free ride program), click here and you will be directed to their web site.

Meeting Mr. Capone

Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint Magic

As I mentioned in this post, last week the Garden Spot got its newest and by far cutest citizen. He was born on Meeker Avenue April 15th, hence his name: Al Capone.

This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting this little fellow face to face.

He is quite the handful, as you will see in this YouTube clip. WARNING: this video features scenes of extreme cuteness.

Enjoy!

Crosstown Local Cavalcade XII: Step It Up

April 21, 2008 ·

Meet the latest poster to grace the bowels of Crosstown Local. The folks at Bravo must really like Greenpoint, as they have seen fit to post two of these advertisements on the same platform…

with predictable results. Those of you who live off the G train at Greenpoint Avenue really should check out this magnum opus on the Queens-bound platform. It is really something. Here are some highlights.

As you can see, this person had a lot of time on his (or her) hands. What else would one expect but to wait? This is, after all, the G train we’re talking about.

Who’d your daddy?

Indeedy…

Greenpoint Construction Site du Jour: 64 Green Street

A reader of New York Shitty (and overall very cool person) used to live in this building. The landlord said he sold the property to a developer (hence why he/she was asked to vacate). Given what I read on ACRIS, I am not so sure. In any case an application was filed with the Department of Buildings to:

TO HORIZONTALLY ENLARGE EXISTING 3 STORY, 2 FAMILY FRAME DWELLING AS PER PLANS FILED

It was disapproved.

There are no valid permits whatsoever for “modifying” this property.

But such trivialities didn’t stop these go getters!

Permits? They don’t need any stinking permits!

Cut these guys some slack complainer!

They cordoned off the front gate!

Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint Magic

Sunday, April 20th, the ASPCA will be providing free/low cost spay and neutering for your dog or cat right here in Greenpoint! Pet owners who can provide proof or public assistance or a Medicaid card can have their pets neutered for absolutely FREE! Everyone else is requested to donate $25.00. This is not only a great deal, but it also reduces the number of unwanted pets that end up being euthanized— or worse— every year.

Those of you who wish to learn about more dates and locations the ASPCA will be conducting free/inexpensive spay and neutering in Brooklyn can contact them at the above-listed telephone number, check out their web site or click on the above flier.

Get A Load Of This: The Power Plant That Won’t Die

April 19, 2008 ·

Via my comrades at Curbed:

On Friday, April 18 TransGas Energy Systems LLC will petition the NYS Siting Board to reverse its March 21, 2008 decision denying TransGas’ application for the permit required to build its state-of-the-art, clean, environmentally positive cogeneration plant in Greenpoint Brooklyn.

In its zeal to appease former Deputy Mayor Doctoroff and the newly gentrified community of Greenpoint, the Siting Board, guided by the staff of the Department of Public Service, gutted the State’s authority over the licensing of electric generating plants and transmission facilities. The Siting Board opted to defer to local governments on whether and where to build new electric infrastructure. The decision to mollify a well-heeled, largely white, professional neighborhood – who simply did not want to have a new power plant in their backyard, however clean it might be – confirms what many observers have come to conclude: that New York State is on a suicide mission to sacrifice the State’s future in order to cater to NIMBY’s.

Um, has Transgas ever tread north of Greenpoint Avenue? Given this snippet of rhetoric I doubt it. Get with it, assholes. This community is not solely white, well-heeled or professional; it is a working class neighborhood that is sick and tired of being used as a dumping ground to mollify other “well-heeled, largely white, professional(s)”.

Comment Of The Week

Marty should give up politics and be a talk show sidekick.

Spanky

Rarely has a comment moved me as much as this one has— and I mean this in a good way. I was not compelled to refresh my knowledge of New York State’s Stalking Law and I found it very witty to boot.

WAY TO GO SPANKY!

P.S.: No disrespect intended to Mr. Markowitz. He’d make Ed McMahon look a dime store amateur! Ed? Fuggedaboutit!

Al Capone: Greenpoint Kitty

April 19, 2008 ·
Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint Magic

This little guy was born April 15th right here in Greenpoint!

Lisacat writes:

“I’m innocent!” He’s more active and feisty than the older Weakerthans kittens I’m fostering. They’re born tough in “Greenpernt”. Note: the pink thing does not become him and is probably too stringy to be safe for kittens. I’ll have to find something more suitable for his next clip!

What else would one possibly expect from a Garden Spot cat? I should know: I have one of my own! They’re small, but they pack a lot of punch! You can learn more about Greenpoint’s littlest and cutest newcomer by clicking here.
