Something I Really Didn’t Need To Know

Anyone who is married will tell you the institution is all about sharing. Sharing a home, sharing a life, sharing the stomach flu, and so forth. This mutually agreed upon bond also entails learning things about one’s partner you may very well prefer not to know. Case in point:

Miss Heather: She is a really beautiful woman. This is really saying something given she is green.
Mr. Heather: Green women can be sexy. Haven’t you ever seen that Star Trek episode?
(Miss Heather swivels around in her office chair, stares at Mr. Heather)
Miss Heather: You should be SO happy Overheard in New York won’t accept submissions from conversations you are involved in.

Yes, my husband is a colossal dork. MY DORK until death do us part. Lucky me.

I cannot honestly say I am a big fan of Tori Spelling (although to be fair she was good in House of Yes). Had it not been for her famous (and now, deceased) father she would not blight our television screens once a week. Everyone knows this— and in all probability she does too. The previous having been said even I have to admit this is a bit harsh.

Ouch.

REMINDER: Dog Bowl 2008

This is just a quick reminder that tomorrow, June 23, 2008 is Dog Habitat’s fund raiser and silent auction at The Gutter. I have been told that there are still plenty of slots available for anyone who wants to bowl at 6:00 or 8:00 p.m. but the 7:00 slot is nearly full! For those of you who are not interested in bowling, the bar will be open to the public and a silent auction will be conducted. Among the items for the bidding are “a gift basket from Dean and Deluca, spa services, an iPod nano and a whole bunch of dog-related treats and services.”

Check it out!

Once again, interested registrants should contact the organizers online via Dog Habitat’s web site and by calling or swinging by District Dog. Individuals are requested to pay $30.00, a team of two will set you back $50.00 (that’s $25,00 a person!). Also be sure to indicate which time slot you want: 6:00 – 7:00, 7:00 – 8:00 or 8:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Mildly Disturbing Image Of The Day: Intervention

I’m not terribly sure what led up to what you see in the above photograph and I sure as hell didn’t make it my business by asking. If I had to hazard a guess I’d say this is Larry da Junkman’s way of administering some tough love. In any case, this is not the first time I have seen a man bound, gagged and taped to a chair in Greenpoint —and I seriously doubt it will be the last.

P.S.: No one was hurt or harmed in any way during the taking of this photograph. After being debriefed the above captive was released no worse for wear. In fact, he thanked Larry. The Thing is a junk shop, not Guantanamo Bay. Simple tomfoolery, nothing more. If it wasn’t I would have done something —like call the police.

And lastly, this fearsome bear hails from Kent Street. The next time Dorothy and her dog Toto decide to go on a concussion-induced journey they should come to Greenpoint. The beasts who roam our urban jungle are quite cute!

Poetry By Phil

Given that today is the Mermaid Parade (and I have no intention of missing it!) today’s offerings will be exceptionally lite. However, I want to take this opportunity to showcase the work of one of my favorite Greenpointers, none other than the tremendously fabulous Phil! The following piece is entitled Thief. Enjoy!

The dog is at my door.
It won’t be long now.
It always happens when people
talk, when you get careless
close, or desperate or
WEAK. And worst of all
Unafraid when you don’t
See your shadow anymore
that angel that walks
besides you, protects you
Vanishes like mist
your old man, and you got holes
in your pocket where dreams
and wishes slip away into
the gutters you sip wine
on. You’re afraid to blink
and the scars on your body
become medals.

If you see Phil on the street, why not give him a kind word for sharing his deeply personal work with us? If you do, you’ll learn he is a tremendously intelligent and very nice guy!

This is quick reminder before I call it a day that Ray Harryhausen’s amazing film, Jason and the Argonauts, will be screened this evening at the American Playground for your absolutely FREE viewing pleasure. The festivities start at 8:00 p.m. so grab those your lawn chairs, pack your picnic basket and check it out. I have no doubt the trailers will be fantastic!

Fedders Friday: Luxury Friedrichs Edition

June 20, 2008 ·

Earlier this week my buddy over at Queens Crap and I were talking about this nugget of joy entitled “Greenpoint Lacks Luxe Condos” from The Real Deal. Here’s a snippet:

Greenpoint is an outpost of under-developed space. The neighborhood has been left largely untouched by luxury developments and rents can be as low as $1,300 for a one-bedroom apartment. Houses can still be bought for under $600,000. However, a few luxury developments have made their way into the community, notably Magic Johnson’s Viridan…

Clearly whoever wrote this has not set foot in this neighborhood— or we have differing opinions as to what constitutes “under-developed”. Speaking for myself, I think the conversion of this distinctive neighborhood into some petit bourgeois bedroom community/resort is progressing quite nicely. It does not need any “help”, thank you very much. Just take a look at this beauty going up on Newel Street.

What was the architect thinking when he (or she) decided to pair red brick with olive green and pigeon shit gray stucco? Seriously. Is this person color blind or did he think employing this jarring combination of colors was making a “statement”? Note the patch of yellow paint on the first floor. I am hoping against hope this is primer of something, but my gut instinct tells me otherwise.

Perhaps what The Real Deal was trying to say was Greenpoint is lacking in tasteful development. In which case, yes, we are definitely slow on the uptake. As for a $1,300 a month one bedroom, I wish these guys would tell me where it is. I haven’t heard of an apartment going for that price in years.

Miss Heather

P.S.: What really gets me about the “tone” is this tome is The Real Deal makes it seem like having a dearth luxury condominiums is a bad thing. Not every neighborhood can or should become a playground for the affluent. Just ask the folks who earn the median income here: $30,000 per year.
