The Greenpoint Lofts, Revisited

It’s been some time since I have written about this establishment. In fact, it is long overdue. Thankfully a reader named Colleen alerted me to their web site, reminding me of something I want to pass along to you, dear readers.

As some of you might recall the Greenpoint Lofts are “business ready loft condominiums” which sport such unbusiness-like amenities such as a fitness center, penthouses and a rooftop terrace with skyline views. The location leaves much to be desired, but it is not at all an unattractive conversion. Obviously someone else agrees with me regarding the latter because I recently discovered a new tenant: Porcupine Tattoo!

This isn’t your grandma’s business condo!

Greenpoint Back In The Day

July 14, 2008 ·

Ever had one of those days where you just can’t get motivated? Call it the summer doldrums or whatever you want, today I have it! Thankfully Laura Hofmann was kind enough to pass along these great old photographs of Greenpoint taken in the 1980’s. Enjoy!

This one should be recognizable to just about anyone: it is the site of our new(ish) Starbucks. The McDonalds is still with us although the pizzeria to the north is now a Polish deli. Somewhat related: the bar (which is obstructed by a van in the above image) looks untouched. This might change as I noticed the “For Rent” sign there has been removed. I wonder what will occupy this space? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Here’s a view of the Greenpoint Avenue bridge and the site of our new and improved waste treatment plant.

Ah the joy that is (or would that be was) 1960’s architecture!

And of course what would a photographic record of old Greenpoint be without a nod to the “Texas tea” that makes our neighborhood (in)famous!

Happy Bastille Day From Greenpoint!

This evening Casa Mon Amour will be celebrating Bastille Day in grand style with a “French Style BBQ” starting at 6:00 p.m. “Tasty food and a cold Pastis, rose or Kronenbourg” are in the offering.

On a related note, it would appear that Little Korea’s ill-fated space at 645 Manhattan Avenue might be poised to get the Gallic touch.

Le Brique means “the brick” in English. I have it on excellent intelligence they are building an outdoor patio in the back. That sounds really nice and all, but will the fare be tasty? That’s what I want to know!

VIVA LA FRANCE!

Press Conference At Newtown Creek

It got off to a late start but the press conference conducted by Nydia Velazquez, Anthony Weiner* and Joseph Lentol came to pass without a hitch. For those of you who were unable to attend this event, the following footage should give you some idea of its purpose: goading the Federal government to declare the area around Newtown Creek a Superfund site.

Here is the second half where Craig Michaels, legal counsel from Riverkeeper, and Assemblyman Joseph Lentol speak.

It looks like Ms. Velazquez and I agree on two things: the 2008 FISA Amendment Act sucks** and our community has waited long enough for a thorough clean-up of many a score of environmental abuse. 2026 is not good enough. We deserve better.

P.S.: The new park where this press conference was held (and is still not open to the public) has already been given a hearty Greenpoint welcome!

Doggie dumplings.

*Who laughed when I waved at a passing Watertaxi and exclaimed:

Welcome to one of the most polluted waterways in the United States!

**I originally stated in this post she voted in favor of this act. This is not true. Ms. Velazquez voted against it. It was passed anyway.

Tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Congressman Anthony Weiner and Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez will be conducting a press conference at the yet to be completed park at the northern terminus of Manhattan Avenue. The purpose of this event is to implore our Federal government to clean up Newtown Creek. Anyone interested in having such amenities as clean air and water with their luxury condominiums should be sure to arrive by 10:30 a.m.

P.S.: Today a tree care workshop will be conducted at the American Playground. For more information click here.

I am seriously considering erecting an online museum dedicated to the many interesting places I find empty vodka bottles in this neighborhood.

I will not disclose who I received this (forwarded) email from because I like— and much more importantly respect— said person. Regardless, as a citizen who lives in a neighborhood teeming with environmental fuck-ups I do not appreciate the tone of said message. Hence why I am posting it here on New York Shitty:

Thanks for getting back to me… (insert name, lol). I’ve shot at DUMBO already and so has everyone else, it’s considered overdone! The more grittier locations are what’s good for high fashion. Aggregate is like a sand and coal mixture, I think it’s used for paving… anyway, they store this stuff in huge piles so it forms pyramids or mountains and it looks really cool (I attached a few images). The only thing is that I can’t seem to find out where the compounds are…

The cement plant at the Morgan Avenue Stop of the L immediately comes to mind. But if any of you, dear readers, can think of abject sites in Brooklyn (Queens, Staten Island or the Bronx) which complement sinuous models clad in glamorous apparel email me at missheather (at) newyorkshitty (dot) com. I’ll forward them.
