A fellow we’ll call “B” writes:

Not sure if you’ll find this interesting. A younger citizen on our block (Manhattan + McGuinness) has angered an older citizen with his scooter-based junk pile / roving artwork.

The back and forth is hard to read in the photo. It reads, “This is not a bike rack. You are not a resident at this building. Any damage to your bike is at your own risk.”

Response: “Of course. This is a public space, meaning a space for the public. So I am not sure what the problem is. Anyone who would do damage, I feel really bad for and sincerely hope they can eventually be in the present moment + make peace with their demons.”

Enjoy.

My prognostication: this is not going to end well.

As Discovered On The Department Of Building’s Web Site

powerofscourIt’s a long story— one which I care not, will not go into in great detail. Let’s just say it starts with the New York Daily News’s puff piece: The Power Of Scour (as seen at left). Therein a manifold number of politicians and “community leaders” posed for the camera and were quoted. Such things happen when elections come around.

I linked to this tome. Follows was my analysis:

1. Instead of making Greenpoint “look” safer perhaps it should simply be made safer?
2. If Greenpoint and Williamsburg are, in fact, among the dirtiest neighborhoods in the city, exactly what does this say about our elected officials? I mean, haven’t they kind of allowed this to happen?
3. Why are we asking folks to pledge to do what they should be doing already?
4. This is a shit show. Plain and simple.

Believe it or not I exercised considerable tact at the time— and now I will not.

For example: this graffiti-ed door. It belongs to 597 Manhattan Avenue— which used to be the Greenpoint Gazette’s Headquarters.

Here you see Mr. Mann, the President of the Greenpoint Chamber of Commerce and various other members of the community, looking despondent over the matter of graffiti.

Now let’s look at what the Department of Buildings has to say about 597 Manhattan Avenue. More specifically: the “No Name Bar”.

Perhaps we should take care of troubles in his own proverbial backyard before trifling with graffiti? Fire code rules and regulations are no joke. In any case, you can’t say this came out of nowhere…

This comes courtesy of an anonymous tipster. Last night at 5:30 p.m. a meeting came to pass at City Hall. Among those invited were our elected officials and Community Board. This was the presentation to be discussed. It contents include— but are not limited to— affordable housing, development of park space and demolition of the Dupont Street sludge tank. Do take a moment to peruse it!

It certainly took long enough, but here is the presentation and comments regarding Greenpoint Landing from last night’s hearing. Enjoy!

As promised, here comes the footage from last night’s hearing regarding 77 Commercial Street. Enjoy!

The public speaking session starts.

And the ostensible “Voice of Our Community”, Christopher Olechowski, is nowhere to be found.

No worries, there were plenty of citizens with something to say. Like one of north ‘Point’s foremost and formidable badasses: Laura Hofmann! You can read her statement here.

Clipper Equity? That sounds vaguely familiar

Angry Panther

I am pleased to announce there was a terrific turn-out at this last evening’s proceedings. Not only did my fellow Greenpointers show up— but they SPOKE UP! So much so, I suspect I will be up quite late uploading all the footage. I cannot say I am exactly fond of pulling all-nighters. However, I realize a lot of concerned folks could not attend this hearing and would find the footage of interest. What’s more when bits Greenpoint glory are to be shared with the general public like this…

…well, then as far as I am concerned, it is totally time well spent. I will share everything in (hopefully) chronological order in two separate posts: one for 77 Commercial and one for Greenpoint Landing. For reasons which require no explanation I felt this citizen (who was speaking in regards to 77 Commercial) merited her own post— and a New York Shitty salute! It is both an honor and a privilege to call you a neighbor, Nancy.
