Stuff

Some interesting urban artifacts are manifesting of late due to 177 Huron Street doing some, um, “housecleaning”.

Alas, Mr. Ed: I knew him well.

Poor Mr Ed

P.S.: If any of my elected officials or the Department of Buildings are reading this, would you be so kind to check this out.

Illegal Conversion Basement

As you can see, this building— or more specifically its landlord (who is apparently overseeing this clean up)— has quite a few interesting complaints filed against him.

Stop Work Order

This property has had a standing Stop Work Order since 1991. If that piece of paper was a person it could buy beer for chrissakes. Perhaps it has? Because it is nowhere to be found.

Choice quote:

Airbnb renters say they can offer an experience hotels can’t — the opportunity to live like a native in funky neighborhoods off the beaten tourist paths.

(You can read the rest here.)

Trust me: any ambivalence you may have on this matter, gentle readers, will change quite quickly when the users of this wonderful “service” walk into your apartment at 9:30 am on a Saturday morning and hand your husband (clad in his pajamas) their luggage…

While on the one hand I was rather despondent to discover the kitty has seen fit to leave, the Greenpoint Avenue Teddy has crossed the one year mark in his watch. Here’s looking at you, kid!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Horsecrap

Mcguinness1

That, “Horsecrap”, the title of the email I received from an anonymous tipster. With a certain level of reluctance I opened it and, as you can see, what I beheld was beyond my wildest imagination (and I can imagine an awful lot). Sometimes one finds love—

horsecrap

or at least its, um, droppings— in the strangest of places. In this case McGuinness Boulevard just a stone’s throw from the Shit Tits. Well done, fellow Greenpointers (?). WELL DONE!

P.S.: I wish I had done this when I married my prince charming, the Mister, almost eight years ago. Of course our anniversary is coming up on Halloween. Hmm…

Spotted At 80 West Street: Sidewalk

SIDEWALK

Ever had one of those moments when you say to yourself:

Wait, something has changed here?

Well this afternoon on Greenpoint Avenue I had just such a moment.

Then it hit me:

(80 West Street, April 12, 2012)

There is sidewalk here and I am walking on it!

I cannot tell a lie: it was a wonderful feeling! I am not 100% certain what brought about this most fortuitous event (which came to pass last week)— but I have a creeping suspicion who had a hand in it. Thus I am closing this post with a shout-out to members of our local Community Board (you know who you are) and Assemblyman Joe Lentol. Thanks!

Wed Oct 9 Public Hearing

Those of you who missed last week’s hearing at the Department of City Planning regarding Greenpoint Landing and 77 Commercial Street, do not despair. It’s online! Point and click your way here. And download this:

screencap

Start at 6:08. Here’s a general outline:

  • Jack Hammer of HPD outlines the affordable housing component. A Q & A session follows.
  • Melanie Myers, representing Greenpoint Landing Associates, speaks.
  • Lisa Gomez, a partner in this endeavor, speaks.
  • 34:59: Speakers against speak. I found Laura Hofmann’s and the most awesome speaker ever, Nancy, to be especially compelling. They speak sequentially starting at 1:02.06  .
  • Speakers in favor speak start at 1:11:43. Of particular interest to yours truly was the testimony of Adam Perlmutter. He was, after all, the attorney George Klein/The Park Tower Group hired to push for the 2005 Rezone in the first place. I wonder if he’s back on the “payroll”— so to speak?
