From The New York Shitty Inbox: Failure To Communicate
D writes (again):
Hi Heather,
Thanks so much for working to keep the community updated! The signs said the detour would start on/about March 12, today, but nothing seemed to be different this morning. Would be nice to know exactly when the change will happen.
Well, the word on the street is construction is set to commence March 19th. It is interesting to note our Transportation Chair, Karen Nieves, was not alerted to this rather useful piece of information until last night. Not only did she voice her displeasure with this turn of events at last night’s Community Board meeting, but she is planning on organizing a public forum next month which will (hopefully) include our local elected officials. When I get the date/deets I will post them here.

Lost In Greenpoint: Weenie The Cat
There are a great many of these flyers gracing north Point’s streets (the above-depicted one hails from Triangolo Pizzeria). If you have seen Weenie (or know of his whereabouts) please call his person(s) at the above-listed telephone numbers. He is clearly missed. Thanks!

THIS WEEK: Memorial Ride & Walk
Last week I posted an item announcing this year’s annual Memorial Ride & Walk as hosted by the folks at Ghostbikes.org will come to pass March 18, 2012. I have an update to share: our very own “Boulevard of Death”, this being McGuinness, has been added to the itinerary. Given that just last week I had a very nice lady* (and lifelong Greenpointer) recount to me the friends/neighbors she lost on this thoroughfare— needlessly and LONG before this became an issue— I consider this time/attention well spent.
Here are the deets:
1:45-2pm: Gather @ Manhattan Ave & Green St (G Train to Greenpoint Ave)
2:05 Unnamed Memorial, Green Street & McGuinness Boulevard
2:15 Liz Byrne, Kent Street & McGuinness Boulevard
2:25 Unnamed Memorial, Greenpoint Avenue & McGuinness Blvd
2:35 Neil Chamberlain & Unnamed Memorial, Calyer Street & McGuinness Boulevard
2;45 Unnamed Memorial, Norman Avenue & McGuinness Boulevard
2:55 Unnamed Memorial, Nassau Avenue & McGuinness Boulevard
3:40 Lepoldo Hernandez, Borinquen Place & South 2nd Street
4:00 Unnamed Memorial, Union Avenue & South 5th Street [Convergence with Memorial Ride]
You can (once again) get updates about this event via Ghostbikes’s web site.

OUTRAGE(d) Help/Vollies Wanted

I suspect many of the people who follow this site are familiar with OUTRAGE (Organization United for Trash Reduction & Garbage Equity). For those who are not in the know the following, their mission statement, should give you a general idea of who they are and what they do:
OUTRAGE is a coalition of more than two dozen community and civic groups dedicated to the reduction of Waste Transfer Stations and Waste Truck Traffic in the communities of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. OUTRAGE members advocate for a more equitable and sustainable solid waste management plan in the City of New York.
This may not seem like a big deal— but I assure you it is. North Brooklyn has the dubious honor of shouldering a disproportionate amount of our fair city’s “dirty work”: be it truck traffic, waste “treatment”/transfer and of course trucks bearing waste. 40% of this New York City’s garbage finds its way to our proverbial doorstep. Thus it should come as no surprise that our community:
- sports asthma rates well above the norm.
- has seen a disturbing increase of pedestrian/motorist accidents as a result of this traffic and a woeful lack of enforcement.
OUTRAGE addresses just these things— and a lot more! But this post is not about the manifold number of environmental issues in our community. Instead, they need help of a highly specialized (and preferably free/cheap) nature. Which brings me to the image gracing this post: it is a screencap culled from OUTRAGE’s site on Blogspot. Simply put, they want to step-up their online presence in the hope they can more reach people. People like you and me. And to this end they need the help of a good Samaritan to design a web site for them.
Trash talk seldom is (or should be) pretty. Instead, this is an opportunity to help a wonderful coalition of organizations build a web site that is user-friendly, author-friendly and informative. Those of you who have the skills to make this happen can contact Courtney via email at: crenken (at) stnicksalliance (dot) org.
Otherwise you can (and should) follow OUTRAGE on Facebook by clicking here. Among other things you will learn that two of nine prospective sites for an incinerator (as under consideration by powers-that-be) are right in our backyard! Follows is one of them:
The land gracing the Queens side of the Kosciuszko Bridge. If implemented this will abut proposed park space and a kayak launch. Nice, eh?

Yesterday upon exiting the G train at Greenpoint Avenue I happened upon this missive. Being a lover of anything involving extra-terrestrials (which the authors of this missive presume Crosstown Local patrons may have encountered— and they may be onto something here), my curiosity got the best of me. I made the call. At a casual listen this solicitation seems to be on the up and up (although it may very well simply be viral advertising for MIB3). Interested parties can view the website for this endeavor by clicking here. TIP: check out the archive of UFO-related news. There you will find a tome entitled “Suffering Slings And Arrows Of Fatuously Impacted Boobs!” (Really)
From The New York Shitty Inbox: Changes…
A person we’ll call “D” writes:
Hi! Have you seen the detour alerts by the b48 bus stops? It wasn’t able to snap a picture this morning, but it looks like they will be repaving Nassau Ave and detouring the b48 to Norman Ave from March 12- Fall 2012 – yikes!
Have you heard any details about this plan? thanks!
This project has been in the works for some time. In fact I attended a presentation regarding it some time ago. However, I wanted the most up-to-date information and to this end asked our the Transportation Chair, a very dedicated lady named Karen Nieves, for the more information. She delivered. The following material will (hopefully) clear up any confusing regarding:
- The scope of the work is being done.
- Why it is being done.
- Who is doing said work. And most importantly of all…
- Who to complain to!
Without further ado here we go!
NOTE: a number of my fellow citizen have voiced interest in a hearing being conducted so as to gain a better understanding of this project and voice their concerns. If and/or when one is scheduled I will post the details here. In the meantime I hope this was helpful, D!
