From The New York Shitty Inbox: The Neighborhood is a Changin’

Lest I have not said so before, I will do so now: I sincerely enjoy receiving contributions from you, my readers. This is especially true today’s item (as seen at left). This hails from Newel Street and I had the pleasure of contemplating it over my first cup of morning coffee. Its founder, a person we’ll call “D”, writes:

Just a couple of shots I thought you’d enjoy. One is of my new rescue (excised) hoarding toys. And the other is of my neighbors recycling…

I take this as a clear sign of gentrification (among other things). If there’s one thing I have learned over the years it is this: perversity has a price. And the cost of this item (for those of you who are wondering and/or are so inclined) appears to be around $60.00. Not exactly cheap, but definitely not top-of-the line either.

It should be noted I found this item on sale online for a much more affordable $32.21— but why not keep your hard-earned dollars in the ‘hood and hit Just For Fun instead? Buy local, folks!

Just For Fun
982 Manhattan Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11222

UPDATE, 4:15 p.m.: on a lark (and with the help of an interpreter: the wonderful woman who operates this business is more proficient in Polish than English) I decided to see what Just For Fun has in the way of prosthetics of the pervy persuasion Currently they have this non-motorized (but substantial) model in a pleasing shade of purple. This item will set you back $19.95 plus tax. NOTE: this and its fetishy friends are secreted well out of view because, as Barbara, the lovely proprietress of this establishment noted, they also sell children’s toys as well! Among other things…

God, I love Greenpoint…

Spotted At McCarren Park: Casting Call

When I saw this while passing McCarren Park this morning I could not help but chuckle. I mean, of all the places to post such a solicitation this person made an inspired choice. In addition to McCarren Park being the (on again, off again) home to some individuals who have seen fit to live in a re-purposed (and pinkified) school bus, but the park proper (the women’s comfort station* and water fountain adjacent to track for example) are quite literally falling apart for lack of maintenance. But don’t take my word for it— here’s what an actual resident of this public space had to say regarding the phenomenon commonly known hereabouts as “Lake McCarren” (as seen at left):

That is gross… AND I LIVE HERE!

“Cribs” it ain’t. In any case, if the above describes you or someone you have the misfortune of having as a landlord or roommate drop these folks a line.

*Which is perhaps why one parent saw fit to let her daughter to take a dump in the McCarren Park Dog Run today? I do not make this shit up.

New York Shitty Videos du Jour: Live From the Memorial Walk & Ride On McGuinness

March 18, 2012 ·

Some of you are undoubtedly aware yours truly has been feeling under the weather of late. For this reason I have been scaling back my activities so as to get some much-needed rest. Nonetheless, there was no way I was going to miss the commencement of today’s Memorial Walk & Ride on our very own Boulevard of Death: McGuinness Boulevard (which, ironically enough, was the site of yet another motorist accident a few hours prior in front of a local watering hole called “The Pit Stop”). Let’s just say this issue hits close to home.

Not only was the turn-out by my fellow citizens and our public officials (not only did Ryan Kounen, the Environmental Chair of our Community Board co-host this walk, but Public Safety Chair (and arguably the most photogenic member of Community Board 1) Tom Burrows, City Councilman Steve Levin and 50th District Democratic Leader, Lincoln Restler, were all one hand) fantastic, but Emily Gallagher gave a very compelling introduction which I took the liberty of filming:

The first pedestrian fatality to be memorialized came to pass at Green Street and McGuinness Boulevard in 2002. Here an unidentified man crossing against the signal was struck and killed. As you will see the traffic in the background is more than a little daunting.

You can view the above itinerary and sobering statistics from today’s sojourn in larger format by clicking here.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Nassau Avenue Reconstruction, Revised Once More

For a project which has not even commenced yet I have to say the Nassau Avenue Construction project has necessitated a great deal of correspondence. The above-depicted material (which was brought to my attention by our Community Board’s Transportation Chair), dates from March 16th and appears to be the most current. NOTE/CAVEAT: the word on the street (READ: the rather large sign stationed at Nassau Avenue and Monitor Street) is work will begin March 20th. Well, they did say “on or about” March 19th…

By Popular(ish) Demand: Posters!

Last month the proprietor of one of our Polish delis took a fancy to my Greenpoint Valentine’s Day card and requested I make a poster of it to grace his establishment. As the image at left indicates, I gladly obliged. Then something happened which neither of us anticipated: a number of people inquired as to how they can get a poster of their own.

Not being the kind of person who turns away pocket money when it can be had, I have opened a store on Zazzle where this item can be purchased. This poster measures 16″ by 20″ (same as the original), is printed on semi-gloss paper and can be yours by clicking here. I myself have purchased one and have to say it is pretty nice (granted, I am a mite bit biased)!

In closing, I am open to creating other products sporting this image— and to this end would like your help! Please share your suggestions via comments or email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Thanks!
