New York Shitty Day Starter: 239 Banker Street Craigslist Advertisement Du Jour
Now they’re employing YouTube footage.
New York Shitty analysis:
- It would probably be advisable to remove the personal items from the previous tenants (who were vacated by the Department of Buildings) before filming.
- Then again, who cares?
But the insanity does not end there. Let’s proceed, shall we?
So now:
- 239 Banker Street
- The Sweater Factory Lofts
- The Factory Lofts
- The 39 Meserole Avenue Lofts
- The “Rustic House” Artists Lofts
are now known as 245 Banker Street. Fascinating. By any other address it still has Stop Work Order.

(Or: Frank Lloyd Wrong)
Arizona needs its own architecture… Arizona’s long, low, sweeping lines, uptilting planes. Surface patterned after such abstraction in line and color as find “realism” in the patterns of the rattlesnake, the Gila monster, the chameleon, and the saguaro, cholla or staghorn – or is it the other way around—are inspiration enough. — Frank Lloyd Wright.
Apparently north Brooklyn, despite the decided lack of rattlesnakes, gila monsters or long, low sweeping lines is also deserving of such treatment. At least this is what this sign intimates. Behold 865 Grand Street for yourselves!
Here’s a view looking eastward.
Here’s a front view.
Here’s a view looking west. On a flight of fancy I looked up this edifice on the Department of Buildings web site. I found this complaint particularly interesting.
If anyone from the Department of Buildings is reading this, I can assure you they were working today!
Or perhaps this chap was simply enjoying the view?
In any case, I found the steel girders required to hold this hunchback (Grand Street’s second such one) together rather disquieting. I know what you’re asking yourselves, gentle readers:
How can this possibly be legal?
Very simple: when the (ostensible) contextual zoning in Greenpoint was approved (in response to turds like 308 Eckford Street), certain thoroughfares— Grand Street being one of them— were, in fact, “upzoned”.
Watch this clip and learn for yourselves.

New York Shitty Day Starter: Another DOB Complaint Lodged Against 239 Banker Street
Lest the Department of Buildings needs any help verifying this complaint I offer this video, shot August 6, 2012:
These photos taken one month later (September 6th) by an anonymous tipster:
And this image which was taken September 10, 2012 by yours truly:
New York Shitty analysis:
- The only thing this complainer failed to note is that the owners of 239 Banker Street are violating a Stop Work Order. This is understandable given they have removed the Stop Work Order from their building (which is in and of itself a violation of the law).
- And despite (0r more likely to due to) a Loft Law application, the landlord is going about business as usual…
But I suppose this makes for even more tenants to organize. It is my understanding the Loft Law (and its revision) were intended to preserve the artistic integrity/fabric of our community. Speaking as an artist, I fail to see how stainless steel appliances and $2,700+ a month rent are crucial factors in “displacement prevention”.

Special thanks goes to French Toast for sharing this beautiful, if daunting, image. Closing on a related note, we are under a tornado watch— so be careful out there everybody!
