New York Shitty Day Starter: Happy Pulaski Day!
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, New York City
A lot folk hereabouts only know this chap by the rather ugly bridge which spans an incredibly toxic waterway which bears his name. That’s a shame. Thus, I am dedicating this, my Pulaski Day post, to a wonderful item from one of my favorite sites: Badass Of The Week.
When some of you, gentle readers, grouse over the shenanigans which will undoubtedly ensue today which will include but by no means be limited to:
- Assorted motor vehicles sporting Polish flags and blaring music tearing up and down our streets honking
- Drunken chicanery.
Please remember this fellow, in some part, made your (and my) shenanigans/chicanery possible. Without further ado, here it is. Enjoy!

This item was brought to my attention via an email blast from the wonderful Pastor-In-Charge of the Church of the Ascension, John Merz. He writes:
Dear folks
I am writing to have you help advertise our community Annual Blessing and Remembrance of the Animals to be held at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension Saturday October 13th at 3pm. If you were able to post on your blogs, online publications and facebook pages that would be wonderful. Here is the text for the ad and a jpeg of the poster is attached. And I might add if there are ever community events etc or things you would like to do at the church do not hesitate to contact me. Any questions about this please contact me (via email) at: ascensionbrooklyn (at) gmail (dot) com
Blessing of the Animals and Remembrance
Saturday October 13th 3pm @ the Episcopal Church of the Ascension
All creatures great and small and their caregivers are invited to join us in the Church as we bless our beloved animals and also remember those that have past. The simple service will last about 15 minutes. People are encouraged to stay around out in front of the Church or in the Garden to strengthen the bonds of our animal loving community. We ask that all dogs be on leash and cats in cat carriers or other suitable transport whatever your animal may be…

Great Moments In Brooklyn Real Estate: Curb Appeal
It’s not exactly clear where this domicile is located. Sure, it is listed as being in Greenpoint (and near P.S. 31, no less) —but the copy goes on to state in is located in Gravesend. Yours truly finds this interesting as these two neighborhoods are located on opposite ends of the Borough of Kings. This of course begs a number of questions. Among them:
1. Is Gravesend the new Greenpoint?
2. Has anyone actually voiced interest in this apartment? I mean, the above image does not exactly exude “curb appeal”— but with loft living being all the rage perhaps I am simply being old fashioned?

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Greenpoint Hand Skills
Hi there,
I wanted to share some info about the free craft workshop that my group, Greenpoint Hand Skills, is hosting at the Greenpoint Library this Saturday. We’ll be making bracelets from the colorful wires hidden inside cable wires. The workshop is led by Sarah Goldschadt, local author of the forthcoming book, Craft-A-Day. I thought New York Shitty readers might be into it too! Info is below.
Without further ado, here’s the 411!

Live From The 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting

As many of those reading this are undoubtedly aware, a homeless man was beaten very severely at McCarren Park this weekend. Gothamist has a synopsis of this horrific incident which you can read by clicking here. In the following footage Deputy Inspector Hurson gives us an update as to what happened. The good news: they have made an arrest. The bad news: they are not certain if the fellow who was assaulted, Pawel, will survive.
It goes without saying that the subject of homelessness dominated last night’s meeting. In fact our City Councilman, Steve Levin had plenty to say on the subject. What I found particularly interesting (and encouraging) was his run-down of the new respite shelter in the works to give our homeless a safe place to sleep this upcoming winter. In addition he outlines the resources available to our local homeless and the rather (and this is putting it nicely) problematic Greenpoint Hotel/the quarter house. Do take a moment to give this— and the frank discussion which followed— a listen.
