Today yours truly had the pleasure of bumping into a member of our local Community Board: a very nice fellow named Esteban Duran. He wanted to bring the following to my (and therefore your) attention. Greenpoint homeowners and business owners whose premises were flooded courtesy of Sandy please take note: this is a service you will undoubtedly find of interest. Mr. Duran writes:
Hey Heather! Good seeing you today. Here’s the blurb about the EPA:
“Do you live close to the Newtown Creek and had a flooded basement or home during Hurricane Sandy? The EPA is on standby to test your home or business for potential toxins brought in by contaminated water. Even if the water has receded, please let the El Puente Green Light District know and we can try to get a team out to test your home or business. In the wake of an unprecedented natural disaster, we are greatly appreciative of the MTA’s remarkable restoration of 84% of subway service. Yet we are extremely concerned about the lack of mass transit access for residents along the L and G subway lines. These trains are not redundant – but essential lifelines for hundreds of thousands of Brooklynites.
As we await the draining of these subway tunnels, we hope the MTA will swiftly expand bus service. We strongly suggest implementation of temporary shuttle bus service along the L and G routes to connect stranded residents to active subway lines.
Speaking as someone whose husband required three hours to get to work today*, I wholeheartedly concur. Sign it and share it, Greenpointers!
As opposed to our Mayor: his “commute” was a mere 25 minutes.
A Request From The Greenpoint Reformed Church

Could you please post this for me? Thanks. We just got a request from Councilman Brad Lander’s office: 400 lunches are needed for medically frail seniors staying in the shelter at the Armory. We need them delivered by 1pm. Here’s the plan: show up at the Reformed Church 136 Milton St. at 9am. If you can, please bring bread, fruit, beverages, etc. We’ll be working hard on this from 9 am to noon. At noon, we’ll pack them in my car and drive them over. For those of you staying up late, feel free to bake cookies, brownies, etc. and drop them off tomorrow morning. Pastor Ann is going to attempt to coordinate this, since Ann Carroll needs a break. So please, be patient with her. If anyone is good at organizing stuff like this, feel free to let her know and she’ll gladly put you in charge. Thanks for all the great work. Please forward this around as I’m a little worried we might not have enough volunteers since most folks are going back to work and it’s early in the day tomorrow.
