Williamspoint Slide Show Du Jour: Old School

PartytimeNYS

This weekend yours truly has been getting caught up on a few things I have been meaning to do, but have never gotten around to doing. One of these tasks has been organizing, scanning and uploading my collection of photographs from Williamspoint of yesteryear (such as the rather awesome one which graces the beginning of this post). I am proud to announce that I have begun this arduous process. Follows is a slide show featuring what I have processed so far. Enjoy!

As the previous sentence indicates, I am far from done with this project. You can anticipate more great old pictures in the (hopefully) near future! Tomorrow I will be featuring another slide show of some of my photographs taken in Williamspoint from 2001-2004 B.C. (before the real estate crash). Boy, how things have changed!

Reader Contribution Du Jour: Change Has Come

This item comes courtesy of a friend of mine named Matt:

Hey there Heather!  I know you don’t normally post much in the way of music videos but I thought I’d pass this onto you since a) I shot it and b) a lot of it was shot in Greenpoint/Williamsburg/Bushwick in front of a lot of the graffiti murals out there.  At the very least, I hope you enjoy it!

Change Has Come music video from Matthew Glasson on Vimeo.

Duly enjoyed, Matt. Thanks for sharing! Those of you who want to hear more of Will Pilot’s music can do so via their Myspace page.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: More Ado About Tree Poop

bitchcakesnyMESS

My buddy Bitchcakes (who took the above photograph) writes in an email entitled “UGH”:

Have you seen this craptacular mess on the Pulaski Bridge? I don’t know when it went up, but I saw it today and I HATE IT!!!!!

To answer your question, yes I have seen this “craptacular mess”. It would appear a number of people have. Many have questions about it, but few seem to like it. Blair comments (in this post I published November 19):

Well, I got an answer sooner than anticipated. After repeated calls to 311 and cruising the DOT website, I was lucky enough to look out my window and see the grafitti artist/stencil man at work on the south end of the Pulaski Bridge. I asked him if he and his gang of artists were also responsible for the wood bench tabletop gymnasium. He said yes. I asked how long it will remain up. He said 11 months. He asked if i liked it. I said I did not because it is cumbersome looking and looks as if only a person two feet tall could sit on it comfortably. But, I noted, others did like it. His response, “Well, that’s the point. You either like it or you don’t.”

So, there you go, the mystery of tree poop solved.

Thanks,

Blair

So there have you. For more reading about this piece of public art (and the testament to ineptitude that is the Pulaski bike lane “plan”) I heartily encourage you to read Restless’s post on the subject. You can do so by clicking here.

TOMORROW: Black Friday Sale At Dalaga & More!

November 26, 2009 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

I don’t know about you but the last thing I want to do on “Black Friday” is go to Manhattan. I would not go so far as to I am anti-social. I’m not. I like people. I just don’t like being around so damned many of them feverishly fighting over discounted goods. I get enough of that on the job. What’s more, there is no need to go to Manhattan when there are so many great places to buy gifts right here in Greenpoint. CASE IN POINT:

blackfridaysale

I have the pleasure of calling co-proprietors of this business neighbors. They’re not only great folks but their offerings are quite lovely and reasonably priced. Check it out!

BLACK FRIDAY SALE
November 27, 2009; 12:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Dalaga
150 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222

While you’re on Franklin be sure to pay a visit to the many wonderful businesses located there. To name a few: Tommy and Roy, my favorite Alter boys; Word Books, Pentatonic Music, Permanent Records and Kill Devil Hill. Be sure not to overlook Manhattan Avenue while you’re at it. Franklin Street does not great Greenpoint holiday shopping in its entirety make.

Do your part to help the Garden Spot’s indie/mom and pop businesses thrive: buy local this holiday season!

In closing, here’s an item that might be of interest to you dog lovers out there: Dog Habitat’s Black Friday Adoption Event!

adoptionday

Jay Lombard (of Dog Habitat, who sent me the above image) writes:

Hey lady! We wanted to invite you to visit our adoption event tomorrow from noon to 5 p.m. Eight rescue dogs available for adoption from puppies to adolescent age. Pure breeds and brooklyn mutts. Please help us find homes for these beautiful pups!

I was initially confused by Jay’s missive. There are no ladies at New York Shitty. But I do appreciate the sentiment and will certainly make it a point to swing by and say “hi” these lovely pups. You should too.

BLACK FRIDAY ADOPTION DAY
November 27, 2009; 12:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Dog Habitat/Unleash Brooklyn
216 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222

In closing this post goes out to Lisacat who did her best to assuage the suffering of an auto shop cat named Bondo. I am certain wherever he is (junkyard cat heaven?) he is grateful for your hard work. I know I am.

P.S.: While I am (ostensibly) on the subject of fur, I discovered something on Manhattan Avenue today that really bothered me.

manhattanfurrierKEVINWALSH

The above photograph graces Forgotten-NY’s Greenpoint page. Regarding this wonderful example of old school signage Kevin Walsh writes:

When you’ve got a good sign, you don’t need to ever replace it. The old school phone number, probably EVergreen, is still there too.

furrier

That is, of course, unless you are Belvedere Partners Corporation. In which case you drill a “For Sale” sign on top of it. I can’t honestly say I am surprised that they saw fit to do this. These folks have been peppering north Brooklyn with balconized Neoclassical crap for years. One of their latest opuses graces Skillman Avenue. It’s a real beauty. It goes without saying you can look forward to seeing it on New York Shitty. Soon.
