From The New York Shitty Inbox: La Taverna Gets DOH’ed?

latavernaTHUMBIt’s proving to be a HOPPIN’ day at the New York Shitty inbox. Charles writes:

Need to snap a shot, but did you see La Taverna, the italian place at Java and Manhattan, was closed as per order of the health and mental hygiene dept? Ack!

I did a little poking around the New York City Health Department’s inspection records and the latest inspection dated from May— and La Taverna passed with flying colors. This certainly makes one wonder what happened. If you have the scoop please share via comments. Inquiring Greenpointers want to know!

Miss Heather

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m.: I did a walk-by. Whatever happened it appears to have been trivial because La Taverna will be open as of 5:00 p.m. this evening!

Or would that be much to DO this weekend? If what I found in my inbox today is any indication there is a log going on this weekend. Mark writes:

Hey Miss Heather did you see this? Papacito’s is celebrating it’s pseudo-one year birthday and recently acquired liquor license. They’re inviting people to come celebrate with free food and tequila. Pretty cool!

Most cool indeed! Among the goodies promised are free tequila shots from 11:00 – 1:00 a.m. and live mariachi music. Check it out!

If mariachi is not your cup of tea, a good friend of mine (and fabulous D.J.), The Professor, will be spinning an evening of “Motor City rock, soul, punk and psycho-funk” at Greenpoint’s very own Boulevard Tavern. Having known the Professor for some time I can attest to his outstanding taste in music. Go. You will not be disappointed!

This little guy got lost in the junk shop last night. It’s a fun place for kitten and humankind alike. I don’t blame him. But at some point the party ends, e.g.; you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here. To this end I was entrusted by Larry da Junkman to retrieve Anthony and take him back to his rightful home. I did so by a string and he warms the Skwinkles of my heart!

Aside from one of the co-owners of t.b.d. and I playing dueling cameras (as seen above) it was a most enjoyable and successful FUNdraising night at t.b.d. The Greenpoint Reformed Church’s Soup Kitchen/Food Pantry garnered no less than $1,470.00 to feed our fellow Greenpointers in need.

brokeassTHUMBI was approached a couple months ago by none other than the man behind the guides and web site, Stuart Schuffman, to write a piece for his weekly “Broke Ass of the Week” column. At long last  (Tuesday, December 1 at 2:00 a.m., to be precise) I finally tendered my response. Things get done at a glacial pace at Chez Shittybut they do get done!

Long story made short, as of this afternoon it is up. I lavish a lot of the love on the ‘hood best known as the Garden Spot of the Universe. It is well-deserved. Sorry Williamsburg, it’s our time to shine. Check it out!

Greenpoint Degentrification Watch: Noble Street

You have heard of Black Friday. You have heard of “Cyber Monday”. Today, dear readers, I introduce for your Thursday afternoon edification (and courtesy of the Greenpoint Historic District): Carbecque Tuesday!

foodiej81 writes (via the comments for this post):

Totally unrelated, but did you see the shell of a car on noble street.  It is parked in front of a fire hydrant across the street from the synagogue. Looks and smells as if it was involved in a bonfire. The windows are blown, insides all charred, doors open wide did you hear about this? I was curious.

As it would happen I spied woman decorating her house nearby. She gave me the scoop:

  1. This car caught fire at 3:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 1, 2009.
  2. The flames shot up as high as two stories. Naturally the fire department was called.
  3. She has reported this lovely sight to the city. She has been told it is “on their list” to pick up.

There’s no word as to whether or not this car was torched or if it spontaneously combusted. However, given the time it caught fire, the severity of the flames, the already poor condition of said “ride” and the fact it sports no license plates whatsoever I’m leaning in favor of arson.

Good times.

Miss Heather

UPDATE, 6:15 p.m.: Here are more pix of Tuesday’s Camry inferno courtesy of a reader named Monica.

She writes:

Thought you might enjoy my pics of the car fire on Noble Street.  The woman forgot to mention the earth shaking explosion (gas tank??) that made us look out the window. And yes the flames were at least two stories high, although I didn’t catch them that high.

Earlier this week I made light of the pool at the Viridian achieving a very Brooklyn hue.  Well, if my inbox is any indication, that wouldn’t appear to be the only thing that’s shaking at the house Magic built. Zan writes (in regards to the above photographs in an email entitled “Stay Classy Viridian”):

hey heather! have you seen the latest, greatest security system that has been installed at the huron street entrance to the viridian? wood planks- the doormen of the new economy!

Needless to say I had to see this in person. I was not disappointed.

You know what they say:

Good fences make good neighbors.

This fence reminds me of the Berlin wall.

As does this, for that matter.

In all seriousness folks, two months free rent or otherwise, I cannot believe people are paying top dollar to live in this dump.
