New York Shitty Day Ender: B61 R.I.P.

You may be gone, B61, but you will not be forgotten.

This post goes out to Bed-Stuy Banana and Best View in Brooklyn. Not only are you among the most wonderful, intelligent and downright nice people I have met via the Interwebs but you ran kick-ass blogs about kick-ass neighborhoods. I miss you and I suspect the greater “Brooklyn Blogosphere” will as well.

Take care and please keep in touch, BSB and BVIB. I love you both! I’ll darken your respective doorsteps come spring. Perhaps earlier.

Consider your respective persons warned! 🙂

Reader Tip Du Jour: Three Kings

(OR: King of Kings, King of Beers & King’s County)

Jay Lombard (of Dog Habitat) writes:

189 green St. Fire escape. Check out the aluminum tree. Gives new meaning to Christmas cheer.

Needless to say I had to investigate this matter immediately. Here’s what I found.

I realize the above image is a bit lacking in terms of quality so I will describe it to you. It is a Christmas tree lovingly erected in the honor of the King of Kings. It is constructed of 12 ounce cans of Budweiser (the King of Beers)  and topped with a bow. It is located at 189 Green Street; Greenpoint, Brooklyn U.S.A.: the County of Kings!  As a very kindly chap across the street noted as I was taking the above photographs:

Pretty cool, eh? She even taped it so it would not fall over!

An opus as this deserves recognition. I don’t care if Christmas is last week’s news. This is Greenpoint Glory at its very finest!

189 Green Street, I salute you!*

*Chez Shitty is a Budweiser and Miller High Life household. Brooklyn Beer does not inhabit our fridge. The reasons for this are numerous, but I’ll tender two:

  1. The political leanings of Brooklyn Brewery’s owner, Steve Hindy. This gent is decidedly pro-Atlantic Yards.
  2. Most of “Brooklyn Beer” is not made in Brooklyn. It is made in Utica.

Mostly the first point.

This item comes courtesy of a lady named Leah of Ghostbikes. Follows is a general rundown what this event is about per Ghostbike’s press release:

The Annual Memorial Ride and Walk brings New Yorkers together to remember pedestrians and cyclists killed in our city over the past year.  This will mark the 5th year that this event has occurred. Riders will visit the site of each ghost bike, a white-painted memorial for cyclists, installed in 2009, then join the Memorial Walk in Greenpoint.  Please join us for this important event.  Louisville, KY cyclists will be riding in solidarity with us to remember their own losses.

Ride Start: West 145th Street and Convent Avenue, Harlem, Manhattan; 10:00 a.m.
Walk Start: Manhattan Avenue and Milton Street, Greenpoint, Brooklyn; 4:30 p.m.

At the moment I am feeling disinclined to write (days like this make me deliciously lazy) so I am going to posit a puzzler to you, the readers.

  1. Where is this found?*
  2. What does it mean?

My curiosity is driving me crazy!

PLAVras

Some of you have brought it to my attention that this post has certain, how should we say, discrepancies. Although I do my best to thoroughly pick over my posts before I publish them, the fact of the matter is sometimes (especially when I am busy— and busy I have been) I do make mistakes. For this reason I am very grateful when folks speak up to set the record straight. One such person to do so is a gentleman named Philip. He is the historian for the St. Stanislaus American Legion Post 1771. He writes:

Heather,

The picture I have attached is from the New York Public Library Digital. It is picture of PS 59 as it appeared in 1931. It never has been an American Legion Post. The P.L.A.V. Is a national polish war veterans  association. They still exist 535 – 539 Leonard Street was George Washington Post #3.

St. Stanislaus Memorial American Legion Post 1771 never occupied the building . The Post was chartered in September 1949, the first meetings being held of the club rooms of St. Stanislaus Kostka located at 10 Newel Street. They eventually held meetings in the democratic club above the old Winthrop Theater located at 135 Driggs Avenue, which is now an Associated Supermarket. From there they moved down the block to Driggs Avenue and North Henry Street and occupied the building until the 1960’s. After Oakland St. (McGuinness Blvd) was widened they purchased the lot where the Slovak credit Union is now located. In 1996 – 97 the Post sold the building to them and in 1999 relocated to 519 Leonard Street which was the Knights Of Columbus Fidelity Council. 519 Leonard Street started out as an Italian protestant church in 1900, the building is about 110 years old.

By the way I spoke to a real estate rep in May of this year and the PLAV had an asking price of over 1 million for the property.

If you want to see more on the post we have web site. The photo album has over 6,000 pictures from the past 60 years. The post history section contains newspaper articles from the Garden Spot News, Greenpoint Star and the Greenpoint Gazette.

I have casually glanced through St. Stans Post 1771’s photo albums. Even if you are not into military history there are some really neat items to be found in this online archive. Among my personal faves are these undated images from the Pulaski Day Parade and these images from their 1979 Valentine’s Day dance. If you’re looking for something to while away this overcast New Year’s Day give this wonderful resource a look-see. It’s really neat!
