Greenpoint Degentrification Watch: Anyone Have $2.6 Million?
If so 48 Box Street, one of yours trulys favorite pieces of real estate insanity, can be yours! What in my opinion makes this listing so special is the advertising copy. It runs as follows:
Magnificent new building in the up coming neighborhood of Green Point, Williamsburg and Lic. Distance to Newtown Creek where thousands of residents are planned, tax abatements for 16 years, 1 car garage, storage space, 8′ concrete, top of the line appliances, height ceilings, Co as now pending on last 2 test.
I checked the Department of Buildings online database and sure enough, this building has no Certificate of Occupancy. I suppose this should come as no surprise. It’s not like the folks who constructed this building gave much thought or concern about such trivialities (including Stop Work Orders) before. As for using Newtown Creek and eight feet of concrete as a selling tool, it remains to be seen how effective this marketing strategy will be. My closing thoughts: if you are going to take this rather unorthodox approach to neighborhood “amenities” why not toss in “steps away from the Pulaski Bridge, McGuinness Boulevard and the Newtown Creek Nature Walk (featuring the Shit Tits— as seen on television!) as well?

Happy Father’s Day From New York Shitty!
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
While perhaps not the best way to kick off Father’s Day I suspect Pa Heather would appreciate it. A rather nice lager is lodged in this sneaker (which can be found on North 10 Street). But this post isn’t about lager or sneakers. It’s about Father’s Day. I suppose I should write a few thoughts about my own.
Retirement has mellowed out Pa Heather’s otherwise dour and highly rigid disposition considerably. I suppose the previous comes with being an accountant. But an ample amount of free time coupled with high speed Internet access has enabled him, not unlike myself, to air his discontentment to a wider audience (much to elected officials dismay). Most recently— and as my inbox humble site will attest— by calling the fair mayor of our city (and I quote):
I suspect a fair number of people, myself included, would agree with his assessment.
But Pa Heather and I did not see eye to eye for a long time. This was because we were (and are) alike in many ways— yet different in others— and were too damned stubborn to admit it. While sporting Pa Heather’s attitude, general awareness and proclivity for profanity, order (as Pa Heather knows it) does not exist in my universe. He and Mister Heather commiserate over this. Often. Simply put: I drove him nuts.
But our respective hearts were and are in the same place. Most importantly, my father inculcated in my person values, while deemed antiquated by some, I still espouse and consider of value:
- Elected officials are accountable to the citizenry, not the other way around.
- One can get recognition— if not monetary gain— by working hard and following the dictates of one’s own conscience. New York Shitty being chosen as the Village Voice’s Best Neighborhood Blog of 2009 made me happy. I work my ass off. To get a second shout-out via their I Blog New New York issue was pure gravy. My dad being proud, sending out bukos of emails to his friends announcing the good news and adding me to his RSS feed meant a lot more.
- Character and honesty counts, e.g.; just because everyone seems to think something is “okay” doesn’t mean you don’t have the right to think and say—- publicly— it is wrong.
On that note this one’s for you Pa Heather: a choice excerpt from one of our favorite movies.*
Moving forward I will give gray hair to other, more deserving individuals, dad.
Love you!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Holy Shit
(TITS, that is)
The above screencaps were provided by a woman who knows quality television when she sees it. Lindsay writes:
Our glorious shit tits had a cameo on the show ‘Royal Pains’ recently. It served as a setting for the fourth installment of the movie series “The Trash Collector”. How perfect!
You can see Greenpoint’s most notable assets (and Eighth Wonder of The World) immortalized for all posterity on the small screen by clicking here. Skip forward to ~39 -40 minute mark because, as Lindsay opines:
The show is awful.
Nonetheless it is a red brown letter day in Greenpoint!

Found In Greenpoint: A Kitty
This item comes courtesy of a lady named Maya, the proprietress of Le Grenier. She writes:
Hi — wondering if any of you North Brooklyners have seen signs for a missing orange cat?
One has just appeared in my garden and she’s definitely a lost family pet — very friendly, cuddly and charming, clean and seems to have been well fed / cared for.
I’m giving her food, water & friendly ministrations but am not sure how long she’ll stay back there (no clue how she even got in, it’s completely enclosed) and I can’t bring her inside (our Galileo is FeLV+) so I’m hoping to track down her owners quickly.
If you know who this handsome lady belongs to— or are interested in giving her a forever home— please shoot Maya an email at maya (at) legrenier (dot) com.
Thanks!

New York Shitty Slide Show Du Jour: Old Tymers Day

As I mentioned yesterday the folks at Phun Factory assembled a host of graffiti artists to give a hitherto largely unnoticed corner of the Garden Spot a paint job. Today I swung by several times to see how things were going. Follows is a slide show of highlights. Enjoy!

Open For Business: Bombay Garden
After spending an entire week working myself into a frenzy over the prospect of having an Indian restaurant in the Garden Spot last night, dear readers, my wait came to an end. I and a small army of curry craving comrades went to Bombay Garden to dine. Follows are some highlights.
I don’t think I have ever seen a lassi quite this vibrant in hue. After some discussion we reached a general consensus it contained coconut milk and carrot juice. It was liked, however those seeking creamier more yogurty fare will probably be disappointed.
Of all the appetizers we ordered this one was arguably my favorite. It is called Bombay aloo tikkyas, but I prefer to call them Bombay latkas. Paired with coriander chutney they were rather tasty.
We also ordered pakoras and samosas. All were summarily consumed.
One item that tickled everyone’s— be they meat eaters or otherwise— fancy was the “chicken lollipop”. Although the Mister and his fellow carnivores were disappointed it didn’t come on a stick (which struck us all as being the point of the exercise) they found the tandoori-meets-lemon marinade flavor compelling.
Being a vegetarian myself I ordered baighun bharta (roasted eggplant) and shag paneer (spinach with Indian cheese). Truth be told the latter left me non-plussed. It was a bit too sweet for my taste. My advice: go with the eggplant instead.
The garlic naan was garlicky and blissfully bereft of grease. Big plus. As for the carnivores, the entree of choice was chicken vindaloo. It was seized upon with such ferocity I couldn’t even get a photo of it. But the biggest surprise of the evening came when we (re)discovered this establishment has a rather spacious patio for outdoor dining…
which is inexplicably decorated with a number of wood plaques for diner’s edification.
New York Shitty analysis:
- As probably anyone (and there were quite a few) who tried Bombay Garden last night will probably attest the service was painfully slow and somewhat disorganized, if gracious and polite. To cite an example: number of people in my group ordered mulligatawny soup. By the time our entrees arrived, alas, it had not. We canceled our order. I chalk this up to the first day doing business. Hopefully they’ll get the kinks straightened out as they get up and running.
- Jackson Heights caliber cuisine this is not. But this is not to suggest there are not items worth trying: there are.
- I know of no place in Jackson Heights— or New York City for that matter— where you can kick back curry while taking in the following piece of wisdom.
All in all, I’d recommend to anyone who wants to give this place a whirl to go at off-peak times or perhaps lunchtime until they get the waitstaff and kitchen better coordinated.
