You can (and should) read the rest here. On a (somewhat) related note, it would appear there is a tax lien on 51 Ash Street. This is of course the location of the “new and improved” boat house.

How/why does that sound familiar? Anyone?

New York Shitty Photos Du Jour: From Metropolitan Avenue With Love

In honor of Valentine’s Day I am going to share a curiosity I recently discovered during my peregrinations.

Someone has seen fit to place hearts on the L Train icons on the subway entrances along Metropolitan Avenue.

Where is love for our very own Crosstown Local, you ask? Well, it took some persistence— but I think I found it.

Anyone care to take a stab at deciphering this?

P.S.: This post is dedicated to our Community Board’s very own Public Safety chair. Today is his birthday. Sto Lat!

Per an anonymous tipster this is it! Note the six story excrescence in the background. Click here and especially here and see this post-Modernist atrocity for yourselves. I for one found it interesting/odd that this was supposedly going to be located at Bushwick Inlet and the architect is different than the one listed as filing the plans 12/30/2013. Hmm…

UPDATE, 7:41 pm: A fellow named Will writes:

Your tipster has misled you. The boathouse renderings you posted are ten years old, part of a 2004 design competition focused on Bushwick Inlet.

So there have you. Perhaps those in a position to do so would, at long last, actually reveal the plans for this facility? You know, in the interest of transparency and serving the public?

I suppose it will come as no surprise that the Newtown Creek Alliance has seen fit to issue a “statement” supporting the “new and improved” boathouse. Exactly how they could do so without actually seeing the plans (and I have been assured by a board member she has not seen them— this same person was not in favor of issue a statement regarding this facility) makes one wonder exactly who is greasing the wheels so to speak. In any case, it speaks volumes about a so-called environmental organization— or at least their more strident members— when they are willing to do “business” with someone who was busted for operating an illegal waste trade facility— LAST YEAR. And of course there’s those Federal tax liens to consider. Not too sure I want to give money to such a person— but what do I know?

I will leave you with one question, gentle readers:

If this new and improved boathouse is so great, why was it not even made public until a blogger (me) broke the story?

This stinks to high heaven, folks…

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Question About Obstructed Sidewalks

A person we’ll call “N” writes:

Hi Heather,

I’ve been walking down Ash Street for the past 3 years. NYCHA has gotten increasing worse at parking their vehicles on the sidewalk prohibiting pedestrians from using it on their way to the stairs on the Brooklyn side of the Pulaski Bridge. It has gotten so bad that they now park vehicles on sidewalks on both sides of the street causing pedestrians to walk in the street.

I have attached some photos from this morning. They even pushed a snow plow blade’s furrow of snow into the sidewalk making passing on the sidewalk even less possible.

I will continue to take pictures of this as it happens. I have tried contacting NYCHA and 311 about this but have noticed no changes. Do you have any suggestions for me as far as who to contact to get this issue noticed?

After a little “back and forth” I have learned that “N” has not only been diligently lodging complaints, but he/she has been recording the complaint numbers as issued by 311. Great! What “N” has not done is forward these complaint numbers along with a general description of the problem, “timeline” and any/all photos to our local Community Board for follow-up! I have said it before and I’ll say it again:

Documentation and persistence is how problems get addressed!

You know the adage about the “squeaky wheel”? Endeavor to persevere, “N”!
