(Or: Frank Lloyd Wrong)
Arizona needs its own architecture… Arizona’s long, low, sweeping lines, uptilting planes. Surface patterned after such abstraction in line and color as find “realism” in the patterns of the rattlesnake, the Gila monster, the chameleon, and the saguaro, cholla or staghorn – or is it the other way around—are inspiration enough. — Frank Lloyd Wright.
Apparently north Brooklyn, despite the decided lack of rattlesnakes, gila monsters or long, low sweeping lines is also deserving of such treatment. At least this is what this sign intimates. Behold 865 Grand Street for yourselves!
Here’s a view looking eastward.
Here’s a front view.
Here’s a view looking west. On a flight of fancy I looked up this edifice on the Department of Buildings web site. I found this complaint particularly interesting.
If anyone from the Department of Buildings is reading this, I can assure you they were working today!
Or perhaps this chap was simply enjoying the view?
In any case, I found the steel girders required to hold this hunchback (Grand Street’s second such one) together rather disquieting. I know what you’re asking yourselves, gentle readers:
How can this possibly be legal?
Very simple: when the (ostensible) contextual zoning in Greenpoint was approved (in response to turds like 308 Eckford Street), certain thoroughfares— Grand Street being one of them— were, in fact, “upzoned”.
Watch this clip and learn for yourselves.

If so, Kevin may very well be your guy!
Do not let this innocent “adopt me face” fool you: this feisty feline is capable of all manner and variety of winsome mischief— and when he isn’t Kevin’s simply resting up for more shenanigans— as I learned at the North Brooklyn Cats adoption event today at Muddy Paws. Enjoy!
Those of you seeking a more mellow companionshould meet “Macaroni”:
This sweet fellow loves to be loved. Today he quietly laid in the lap of one lady visitor for 20 minutes. As you can see from the above image he does not like living in a cage. He wants a lap to call his own— maybe yours? You can learn more about Kevin, Macaroni and their equally adorable (and adoptable) friends by checking out North Brooklyn Cat’s Petfinder page. Check it out!

Today upon awakening to another lovely autumn day I decided a walk was in order. It was on Broadway that I encountered Felipe. If he looks familiar to you, gentle readers, this is because I have featured him on this site on a couple of occasions. Today, however, I had the pleasure of personally meeting this incredibly friendly fellow. I can assure you his smile is contagious. What’s more, he even let me model his sombrero!
Lost In Williamsburg: Louie

Each and every lost stolen pet flyer is heartbreaking. The above one, however, is even more so than most. Firstly, I stumbled upon this missive well outside the confines of the 94th Precinct (Graham Avenue at Boerum Street ). Clearly Louie’s family has cast as broad a net as possible in the hope of his safe return. As for the “copy”— that pretty much speaks for itself.
No indication has been as from where Louis went missing. However another flyer located nearby (in a state of deterioration) noted he has just been groomed. Perhaps this is a clue? In any case he is sorely missed. If anyone reading this has seen Louis or knows of his whereabouts, please contact his “people” at the above-listed phone number. Otherwise, and as this flyer indicates, anyone in possession of this adorable fella can (READ: should) return him to the 94th Precinct. No questions will be asked.
Thanks!

That’s right folks: following a rather lively summer the first Combined Public Hearing & Board Meeting of our local Community Board (whose agenda can be seen above) will come to pass this upcoming Wednesday, September 12th. Once again: Any/all interested in speaking must sign up by 6:15 p.m.! Those of you who are curious can view a map of the manifold number of new liquor license applications by going to my comrade’s site.
Community Board 1 Combined Public Meeting & Board Meeting
Wednesday, September 12, 2012 starting at 6:30 p.m.
The Swinging 60’s Seniors Center
211 Ainslie Street
Brooklyn, New York 11211
UPDATE, 8:54 P.M.: I somehow overlooked sharing one of the more curious items in the rather lengthy roster of liquor license applications. Without further ado, here it is:
7 North 15th Street
At this rather curious location will be— albeit potentially— a microbrewery and restaurant.
Upon which this notice was posted in accordance to the rules— albeit out of view of anyone under, say, 6′ tall. It notes they are applying for a sidewalk cafe seating as well.
