22 Havemeyer Street, Revisited
It has been six weeks since Bob shot the above, his last, footage. In this time little has changed for those who have been displaced by this building. But this is not to suggest it’s been anything other than business as usual for Mr. Choi.
The above photograph (which was taken last week) is proof positive that no dirty deed goes unrewarded in Williamsburg. A Tale of Two Cities indeed!

From The New York Shitty Photo Pool: Carbecue
Ah yes, nothing says Spring has arrived in Greenpoint quite like a charbroiled S.U.V. Take this splendid example from Kent Street as captured by Kitchen Prof March 29 for example. I have little doubt shenanigans such as this will provide ample added-value in the way of scenic vistas (if not property appreciation) to the tenants of the Pencil Lofts for some time to come! Nice.

Reader Contribution Du Jour: Awwwww Fook!
Although both I and my good friend down at Bed Stuy Banana have already featured this delightful establishment I’m going to do it again. Some things just don’t get old. Jason Lombard (of Dog Habitat) who sent me this photo writes:
I know you venture to Bed Stuy once in a while – I was there last week and came across this joint. The Fook Hing Chinese Restaurant on Nostrand Ave. Close to the fook hing G stop. The sign says it’s fook hing delicious. I’ll take their word for it – I didn’t try the fook hing chicken. But that’s a good thing because they got shut down for fook hing rats!
I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Great Moments In Product Placement: Crosstown Local Edition
There is a time and place for this sort of thing. 3:17 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on the Smith – 9th bound platform of the G train at Greenpoint Avenue is not one of them.

Crosstown Local Photo Du Jour:
Clearly the recession has had some impact on reality television viewing. In Greenpoint, anyway.

Great Moments In Marketing: Special Flatbush/Ditmas Park Edition
This example of marketing savvy comes courtesy of my friend down at Flatbush Gardener. He writes:
There’s more story behind the photo, too. As soon as I stood in front to take a picture, the (presumed) owner came out, with two or three of his staff. He wanted to know what I was doing. Not aggressive at all, just seemed concerned. I told him I was taking a picture of his sign.
Owner: What are you doing?
Me: Taking a picture of your sign.
Owner: Why?
Me: You know it’s misspelled, right? It’s supposed to be “Taliban”, right?
Owner: Are you going to get me in trouble?
Me: I don’t see why.I went on to explain that I already had a “Taliban scarf” – what I
know as a keffiyah – I just wasn’t wearing it at the time.Owner: What color is it?
Me: Red.
Owner: I have lots of colors inside.
Me: I know, I saw the sign (pointing to the sign that says “More colors inside”!)
Owner: Come inside.
Me: I don’t need another one right now.
Owner: Come inside.
Me: [Thinking there is some non-zero danger of being recruited for something] Another time. The sign is still up.
Say what you will about this chap’s advertising prowess (or lack thereof), it’s still better than this or this.

NEXT WEEK: 4th Annual Walk & Ride
This item was forwarded to me by Ghost bikes. Although I do not operate a bicycle (or anything form of transportation sporting wheels), I have had a number of close calls as a pedestrian. And when I write “close” I mean landing on the hood of some gent’s car because he decided to make an illegal left-hand turn.* Ghost Bikes writes:
The NYC Street Memorial Project invites you to the 4th Annual Memorial Ride and Walk in remembrance of cyclists and pedestrians killed on the streets of NYC in 2008. The ride, which will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2009, has 4 starting points: Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and lower Manhattan.
Riders will visit the site of each ghost bike, a white-painted memorial for cyclists killed on the street, installed in New York City in 2008. They will join a Memorial Walk to honor pedestrians killed in the past year in lower Manhattan.
For more details (including who will be remembered and any possible changes in the itinerary) check out Ghost Bikes web site.

P.S.: On a related note, it would appear that Community Board 1 did a little “housecleaning” of the Transportation Committee over the holidays. Ho. Ho. Ho. For the full scoop point and click you way over to the Gowanus Lounge.
*Being the good little citizen I am I brought this to the NYPD’s attention. They refused to investigate it despite the fact I:
- had his license plate number
- two witnesses and
- he left the scene of an accident.
Why, you ask? Because I was “not sufficiently injured”. ADVICE: if you have the misfortune of having the previous happen to you GO TO THE HOSPITAL. Even if your only injury is a bruise on your ass.
How many hipsters does it take to turn off a smoke detector?
Hell if I know. All I’m saying is for the last two hours my husband and I have had the pleasure of hearing “BEEP, BEEP” at four minute intervals. OVER AND OVER. Why? Because our ‘nabes tossed their smoke detector behind their/our apartment.
Why didn’t they just remove the fucking battery!?! And to think these are the very folks who will be bankrolling my social security in my old age. I’m already staking out my spot under the BQE.
