Every so often I am reminded that I know some pretty darned interesting people. This morning (when this tome from the Village Voice was brought to my attention) is just such an example. I clicked on the link and sipped my coffee. After it pulled up I found myself muttering:
I know that guy in the gorilla suit.
It’s true. I do. What’s more I have to say I am really jazzed by the thoughtful commentary Larry tenders in both the previously-mentioned article and this Op-ED which can be found on his blog. Follow is a teaser from the latter:
…The issue here was always a bigger picture of a changing City and country. The idea of a flea market being a corporation is embarrassing. A flea market is a community of various people coming together and realizing that they could be an outdoor store of used items; some are junk, some are collectible, and some are antiques. Some junk turns out to be a rare antique, and some antiques turn out to be reproductions. Some people are selling off their dead dad’s pipes, and some people are selling their dead fishes, (not needed anymore) fish tank. It is hard to believe that it is packaged as something to be marketed and trademarked. It’s embarrassing laughable, not for Brooklyn Flea, but for customers who believe the preciousness of it all…

A fellow we’ll call “B” writes:
Not sure if you’ll find this interesting. A younger citizen on our block (Manhattan + McGuinness) has angered an older citizen with his scooter-based junk pile / roving artwork.
The back and forth is hard to read in the photo. It reads, “This is not a bike rack. You are not a resident at this building. Any damage to your bike is at your own risk.”
Response: “Of course. This is a public space, meaning a space for the public. So I am not sure what the problem is. Anyone who would do damage, I feel really bad for and sincerely hope they can eventually be in the present moment + make peace with their demons.”
Enjoy.

Market-rate rents are legal but they’re affecting peoples lives.”
You don’t say, Mr. Olechowski? Speaking as a resident of north ‘Point I have seen a great many people priced out of this community. The Latino population, in particular, has taken a drubbing. Don’t take my word for it— a simple comparison of the 2000 and 2010 Census statistics say it all.
To favor one part of the community above all others is not only illegal*, but it strikes me as craven political pandering. I would also like to note that by designating housing for a specific group/demographic, one is effectively precluding others access. Thus the discrimination being exercised is actually two-fold.
Of course you can’t say I did not see this one coming. I wonder who will administer this special Polish-specific housing? North Brooklyn Development Corporation, perhaps? Yes sir: those ULURP hearings were essentially co-opted by local organizations whose interest is getting a cut of the action be it in the way of parks, affordable housing, etc. The overall health/well being of this community is immaterial. I’ll refrain from using the unseemly word “extortion”. Whoops, I just did.

*The man doesn’t give a flip about Community Board One’s By-laws or Parliamentary Procedure, so why should this be surprising? Really?
