From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Benefit For Barie

A gentleman named Michael writes:

Hi Miss Heather –

I was hoping you could spread the word about a hate crime that happened a few weeks ago in Williamsburg.  on the corner of N. 4th St. and Wythe.  A friend of mine who lives in the area, Barie Shortell, was attacked and on the way home one evening.  He was not robbed, but the people attacking him did mock him with anti-gay taunts before they attacked him…breaking his nose, jaw and eye socket.  The attack has been deemed a hate crime.

Barie is doing much better but is not insured and will certainly still have a way to go in recovery…more surgeries are guaranteed.

Any attention we can draw to this would be amazing.  Barie could really use the support and people should know that this kind of shit is happening right here right now?

Duly posted. For what it is worth I heard about this disgusting act at last week’s Community Board meeting. It was described as being “pretty bad”. This is an understatement (he was in surgery for over nine hours to have his face reconstructed). Please be a good neighbor and help spread the word about what happened to Mr. Shortell. Those who are able, please tender a donation to help defray medical bills and/or attend the previously mentioned fundraiser at Blackout:

Gay Bash: A Benefit For Barie Shortell

The above assortment of paraphernalia was captured by Miss Mousey Brown yesterday afternoon. She writes:

The piles of garbage (that are primarily used syringes and hypodermic needles) have been in this corner of the lot for a week. I was told this by a woman who saw the dumper throw them over the fence. She almost got a plate number. I am going over with a rake to try and get as many of the needles out that I can.

I honestly do not know what to day about this other than it is totally unacceptable— and dangerous!

UPDATE, 3:15 p.m.: Intrigued I decided to swing by this site and see things for myself. I encountered something rather interesting on the “sidewalk” on North 10 Street between Union Avenue and Roebling.

P.S.: Oh yeah, did I mention a dog lives amongst this rubbish?

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Dispatch From The Astral

A tipster (who sent me the above photo) writes:

This is why I always lock my door when I am home. It goes without saying that I lock it when leaving the apartment. My neighbor noticed it, too, but had no ideas as to which apartment it was. I’m guessing the note writers didn’t want to divulge that information. No idea if the police, the landlord or the super were informed.

Unrelated to that, she also told me that last summer shots were fired outside the building. She called the police. I had heard the noise but was unsure of what it was. The police came and found the gun tossed into one of the garbage cans out front. Yikes.

Sigh. Feel free to share the note photo via NYS if you like.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. While Greenpoint is one of the safest neighborhoods in the city bad things and can do happen here. I cannot over-emphasize how important it is that we s citizens take simple precautions such as keeping the front doors of our buildings and individual apartments closed and locked. As the above anecdote clearly proves there are people here waiting for the right opportunity to cause trouble.

New York Shitty Video du Jour: Graham Avenue Sausagefest

Today started on a dull, if slightly aggravating, note for yours truly. Since the temperature was mild I decided to brave the rain and go for a walk. All went well until 1:00 p.m. Then came the deluge and I got soaked. I headed to the closest stop of the Crosstown Local without delay. When I reached the corner of Ainslie Street and Graham Avenue let’s just say something um, interesting, arose. Enjoy. Or not.

A few thoughts:

  • Yes, the quality of this video (as uploaded) is iffy.* This is not unintentional. However, I can assure you this man was fondling himself— and believe you me he was “pitching a tent” in those tighty whities! For reasons yours truly cannot yet ascertain, this somehow made the whole episode even more revolting.
  • More than anything I was dumbstruck by this man’s persistence and sheer chutzpah. The fact I stormed across the street in a huff (Yes, I jaywalked. I did not want to go back to the corner and pass by this man. I was more concerned about his safety than my own. I was pissed.) and entered Trattoria 312 did not faze him in the least. He just stood there. With his damned fly open.
  • The guys at Trattoria 312 were— to reiterate— very responsive. This is laudable given I was apoplexic with incredulous rage and did not have my usual gift of gab at the time. One of them even stood outside and watched this gent (which was standing next to their sandwich board advertising lunch specials) as I left their establishment. For this I am very grateful. Thanks again, guys. You just got my business— and given I am still a wee bit bitter Barosa is gone this is saying quite a lot!

*I have burned my raw footage onto a CD and will be handing this off— along with a photo of this gent— to the 90th Precinct.

UPDATE: It has been handed over to the 90th.

Notes From the 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting

It was a pretty subdued meeting last night (and no spitting was spied by yours truly). Without further ado here is some footage with commentary.

PREFACE: a roll call was held and minutes from the previous meeting recited. Moving forward all 94th Precinct Community Council Meetings will be conducted at the Church of the Ascension:

127 Kent Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222

Click here for this year’s schedule of 94th Precinct Community Council Meetings.*

Various and sundry police officer introduced themselves:

  • Lieutenant  Marvin Louis, Community Affairs Officer for North Brooklyn Task Force.
  • Sargent Mullen: Head Inspector for the 94th Precinct. She mentions that an elderly woman was mugged on a Sunday en route to St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. The perpetrator of this crime has been caught.

Part I: D.I. Hurson give a run-down of crime statistics.

  • Crime was down 19% last month
  • Car break-ins are still the biggest problem.
  • Last month there were three car break-ins in as many weeks. This is good. And our multiple snow storms had something to do with it, as he notes.
  • Transportation/traffic enforcement is up 37%
  • The Phil Collins Parade is noted.
  • An attendee brings up the robbery at the Greenpoint Reformed Church. This came to pass during Friday night Bible study and I have been told that residents of both the Greenpoint Hotel and the 3/4 house have been ruled out as suspects.
  • The subject of the aforementioned mugging is resumed.
  • Traffic issues are discussed.

A representative from the Organized Crime Control Bureau (which covers drugs, prostitution, gambling and automobile theft) speaks. He advises everyone in attendance that if he/she sees any of the aforementioned activity to report it at: (646) 610-6610. Your identity will remain anonymous if you so desire.

Part II: Lincoln Restler introduces himself and suggests a cooperative policing model be established in north Greenpoint.

Part III: A Greenpointer reminisces about the bad old days and expounds upon about public policing. This garners much applause.

Part IV: A couple of citizens complain about graffiti

  • Interesting fact: per D.I. Hurson north Brooklyn leads the city in graffiti arrests.

52/365 - Snowy North Greenpoint rooftops, Midtown Skyline.

I leave you this evening with this lovely image taken by Gina Herold. Otherwise to close on a totally unrelated note yours truly attended this evening’s 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting. Although it was a pretty uneventful affair I learned two things I found rather disturbing:

  1. The Greenpoint Reformed Church was held up during Friday Evening Bible Study.
  2. An elderly woman was mugged on her way to St. Stanislaus Kostka at 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning. The good news is (if you can call it that) is the “perp” was caught.

Naturally I shot footage and took notes. You can look forward to both of the previous soon!

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: Trouble At The Dzien Dobry Drinking Forest?

The tipster who forwarded me the above photographs gives a first-hand account of what went down:

Midweek mayhem cut into McCarren Park’s Dzien Dobry Drinking Forest’s happy hour. NYPD and NYFD EMTs responded to an incident involving the co- treasurers of the Dzien Dobry Drinking League (DDDL), which resulted in a bloody nose and an escort out of the park of several of the group’s core members. The meeting resumed immediately after emergency response left the scene. This brief interruption in the group’s daily 20 hour al fresco brainstorming sessions will not be recorded in the minutes of their monthly report.

This item comes from a woman we’ll call S. She writes:

Hey Miss Heather,

Early this a.m. (2:30?) my husband and I were awakened to commotion and yelling outside our house, which is mid block India St.between Franklin & Manhattan.  My husband looked out and saw cops restraining a young man on the asphalt between 2 parked cars.  A total of three police cars were converged on the scene, 2 having come down India St. the wrong way. The young man was strenuously restrained and loaded into a police car.  After which police officers searched the gutters and snow mounds with flashlights.  The police left about 3:30.   This scene was a lot like the gunfire incident on our block last year.  And it seems like gunplay is getting to be a recurring theme here in the point.  Have you heard anything about this incident?  Your blog was the first place I looked for information.  Yes you’re that much of a neighborhood resource!!  For which I say thanks.

First off, thanks for the nice words S. They are appreciated! Secondly, I have not heard anything about this incident. I have spent most of today enjoying the beautiful weather! If anyone reading this has the skinny on what went down please share via comments or via email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Your identity will remain anonymous if you so desire. Thanks!
