From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: Another Anti-Gay Incident?

August 17, 2011 ·
Filed under: 11211, Criminal Activity, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn

This comes straight from the 94th Precinct via an anonymous tipster:

FYI – Today, Community Affairs office Scott Adamo called to relate a bias incident:

Yesterday, at 12:45 PM, a group of teenagers assaulted a male standing on the sidewalk of Bedford Avenue and North 7th Street. Reportedly they yelled a homosexual slur. After a verbal interaction, the attack occurred. The male was smacked on the face with an umbrella.

This is a better reason than any I can think of to remind everyone next week, August 22nd, Public Assembly will be hosting Stand Up! Speak out!

From The Greenpoint Grapevive: A(nother) Robbery On Nassau Avenue?

I learned from a tipster this morning that another robbery has come to pass on Nassau Avenue this morning at 2:00 a.m.. This time at the Mini Mart Deli & Grocery at the southeastern corner of McGuinness Boulevard and Nassau Avenue (as seen above). I decided to swing by and ask what happened. The very nice lady behind the counter confirmed that a robbery did indeed come to pass between “2:00 and 3:00 in the morning” and that two men were involved. No word about whether or not guns were involved. The most important thing is no one got hurt. Otherwise: YIKES!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: The 3/4 House at 66 Clay Street To Close?

A person we’ll call “E” writes (in an email entitled “Halfway House Rumors”):

Hi Heather! A neighbor told me, that one of the halfway house residents told him, that the place is closing in 2 weeks. Have you heard anything about this?

As it would happen I bumped into a friend of mine, Philip, (as seen at left) today and he told me the very same thing! Mind you, he did not look as dapper as he does in this photo. Rather, he had his left arm in a sling after having it broken by a resident of said three quarter house. He told me that life at the “Hotel” is the worst he has ever experienced. When one takes into consideration that Philip has resided at 1109 Manhattan Avenue on and off again for a number of years this is really saying something. Among other things he told me today:

1. He recently had to throw out all his clothing and bedding due to an ongoing (and I’m surmising: untreated) bedbug infestation.

2. There has basically been an ongoing “war” between Hotel residents and those of the three quarter house for some time.

That’s all I know, gentle readers. If you have anything to add please do so via comments or email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Your identity will remain anonymous if you so desire.

Thanks!

Miss Heather

P.S.: On a related note I have also received a rather fascinating comment (regarding this post) from someone claiming to have once worked at the Greenpoint Hotel recently:

I was a former employee of Jay Deutchman at Greenpoint Hotel. I was hired in June ’11 as Fire Safety Director. It is the absolute worst building I have ever worked in. It is a danger to its residents and the community. The Fire Alarm system is not connected to a central station, as the phone lines are out. There are no sprinkler heads. There are no “smoke heads”(smoke detectors wired directly to the alarm panel, which are supposed to sent a signal to the central station). 100 men share 4 bathrooms, the stench of human feces is unbearable. It is loaded with lice, vermin, rodents. The first week I was there, I was paid. The second week, I was not. I quit soon after, and am still owed two weeks pay by Jay Deutchman. Contrary to his statements in his interview with you, he does not have 8 “safety directors”, he had at most three when I was there, myself being one. I have been a licensed Fire Safety Director for 18 years, and this is the worst firetrap I have ever seen. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

Hmm…

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Drunk Driving Incident On Franklin Street?

A person we’ll call “H” writes:

Attached is a pic of a major car accident on Freeman and Franklin.  Around 3 or 4 in the morning Saturday night I couldn’t sleep and was watching TV….suddenly an enormous, frightening screech and crash went off…just from the sound of it I thought this was going to be really bad.  I looked out my window and saw a car facing south in the northbound lane of Franklin.

Went down there to help with any possible casualties….by the time I got there (5 minutes) there were 4 or 5 other guys and the two guys who were in the car were amazingly OK but I am pretty sure very drunk.  They kept demanding they help us move the car which was laughable…the front right tire was completely blown out and the front of the car was basically resting on cement.  After a few minutes the driver finally figured out it wasn’t moving and they took off (I’m no genius, but I think to avoid a DUI).  Looks like they were headed north on Franklin, somehow veered into the south lane and nailed the back of a parked truck which nailed the cars parked in front of it.  A Mercedes in front of the parked van got its front pretty crumpled.Cops came, looked for the guys, couldn’t find them (no surprise) and called a tow truck.  These guys were both really dumb and really lucky…..

UPDATE, 3:31 p.m.: Another person we’ll call “B” has stepped forward with more information!

Heather,

I was walking home from Shayz Lounge when this happened, I was at the intersection of Greenpoint & Franklin when I heard the collision. By the time I reached the scene, the drivers were gone, but those who had arrived out of concern were standing around waiting for the cops. When the squad car did show up, the officers took all the details form those who saw the driver & passengers leave (no one saw the actual accident). Just as I was about to walk away, I saw someone who fit the driver’s description standing half a block away, speaking on his cell phone. I asked one of the guys who had seen him if that was him . . . it was. He had walked back to turn himself in. He gave himself up and was arrested at the scene.

His friends did not return; at least not while I was there.

Anyway, I thought you might want to know.

New York Shitty Day Starter: An Update Regarding The Robbery At 93 Nassau Avenue

This morning I awakened to find an email from Deputy Inspector Hurson of the 94th Precinct. I am pleased to pass along that one of the men responsible for last week’s robbery/shooting has been apprehended! His name is Alex Lagoa and he was released five years ago after serving a twenty year sentence for murder. It should be noted he shot no less than two police officers while being arrested for the aforementioned crime. Yikes!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: An Assault/Attempted Robbery On Montrose Avenue

I have refrained from posting this item until I had all the facts. Now that I have them I will pass them along here. On Thursday, July 28, at 9:00 p.m. a young woman was assaulted after entering her apartment building on Montrose Avenue.* The assailant, who wore a red bandanna to conceal his face, wrestled her to the floor. While her companions watched he attempted to use a box cutter to cut the strap of her purse. She had the presence of mind to (as it was described to me) “scream bloody murder”. Luckily, this was enough to scare him. He fled the building and rode off on a bicycle. A police report has been filed.

It was posited to me by my tipster that this man managed to gain entrance to the building because both doors gracing the entrance were left open. Please, PLEASE let this be a warning to all reading this tome to exercise additional vigilance when exiting and entering your homes. Do not simply “buzz” people into your building. Demand that all visitors identify themselves or better yet: go to the front door in person and let people in.

For all intents and purposes Montrose Avenue is a highly trafficked and pretty safe street. If this can happen there (a stone’s throw from the 90th Precinct, I’ll add) it can happen anywhere. Stay safe, folks!

This very disturbing item comes from a person we’ll call “B”. He writes:

Hi Miss Heather,

I just wanted to let you know that my wife and I were walking our dog last night on west and eagle and came across a garbage bag with at least one probably two dead pit bulls in it…It was truly horrible and heartbreaking as they looked like they were used for fighting and then just tossed out in a black garbage bag…I don’t know what kind of despicable person would do such a thing. We called the ASPCA animal cruelty hotline, but they said they can’t really do anything unless you see the crime in progress and instructed us to call sanitation or 311…so I guess they would just be picked up and disposed of. I hope you can put the word out to people to keep an eye out for anyone dumping anything around there. It was really nasty and there was blood everywhere on the ground…not sure if the bag is still there at this point, but hopefully someone will see something next time and we can catch these bastards.

I have reached out to the 94th Precinct in the hope I can find out:

  1. If this has been brought to their attention and
  2. what is the standard protocol if someone (god forbid) comes across something like this in the future.

Update, 4:21 p.m.: Here’s what I have heard from D. I. Hurson.

Miss Heather, just got your e-mail… I have not heard of any dog fighting in Green point. It sounds from your email that the dogs were dumped on West street (since it can be somewhat deserted. If anyone suspects dog fighting they should call 911 immediately.

So there you go.

P.S.: Special thanks go out to Queens Crap for bringing this link to my attention!

Via The North Brooklyn Community Group: Alert!

This item comes from (no kidding) C-Town’s Tumblr page. Please, please exercise caution when out and about ladies— especially late at night! In closing, I will leave you with some food for thought: Diane Jackson (of the Cooper Houses) has been very vocal at 94th Precinct Community council meetings about criminal activity in her corner of the neighborhood. Some of these incidences have been very violent:

(From: http://www.newyorkshitty.com/greenpoint-goodness/?p=62609)

Neither the Cooper Houses nor the homeless shelter at the former Greenpoint Hospital are very far from where these women are being assaulted. Whether or not the same guys are responsible is anyone’s guess. However, it does make it all too clear that people— especially senior citizens and women— who live in this area need to be very, VERY vigilant of their surroundings and exercise caution. Stay safe, folks!
