From The New York Shitty Inbox: Beast & Bling
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
I receive a lot of emails about cats needing homes. Some of them strike me as being dubious, e.g.; the person is simply tired of taking care of them and for this reason seeks my assistance. I am not going to lie to you: this makes me angry. Owning a companion animal is a lifelong commitment. Pets are not something that can simply be thrown away when you no longer want them or prove to be tiresome. They are sentient beings, not chattel. I mention the previous because when I received the following solicitation I was, to be perfectly frank, a bit leery. After some online “discussion” my concerns were quickly assuaged. Not that this made me any happier: it didn’t. Read on and you’ll learn why. Laura writes:
I know you are dedicated to finding wayward kitties good homes. I was wondering if you could help put the word out about these two fine ladies. I took them in after they were abandoned by a evil roommate who took off to Kansas and now can’t be found. He went on a “hiatus” from NYC and I agreed to temporarily take care of the cats. I guess he decided to never come back… They are wonderful kitties, but they are having serious problems dealing with our new baby and my other cat. There has been some hissing at the baby and many fights with the other cat. I’m worried about what might happen (we live in a railroad, so there’s no way to separate). I really do not want to bring these cats to a shelter — they are really affectionate sweet kitties and deserve a good home.
BEAST
Beast is a fluffy blackish grey approximately ten-year-old kitty, taken in at the same time as Bling. She is spayed, in excellent health and also may need some updates on her shots. Beast is a very small kitty and looks kind of like a mythical woodland creature. This cat will love you ’til you don’t know what to do. She loves to curl up on your lap and purr (and you hardly notice because she’s so light). She has an extremely sweet disposition and tolerates children quite well, but not other cats (except for Bling.) She is litter box trained and also good about using the scratching post. She is playful and also an excellent flycatcher and mouser.
BLING
Bling is an approximately ten-year-old silver tabby. She has been spayed and is in excellent health. She may need some updates on her shots. Bling is a well behaved, playful and extremely loving cat. She loves to chase her laser toy, roll around on the floor purring and rest her head in your lap while you pet her. She is litter box trained and is very good about clawing the scratching post and not the furniture. Bling is not a fan of kids or other cats (except for Beast, her “sister” who she gets along with fine.)
Anyone interested in giving these two cuties the loving (and preferably child-free) home they so richly deserve should contact Laura via email at: elchipz (at) gmail (dot) com
Thanks!

Greenpoint Videos Du Jour: Adoptable Cutie Cavalcade!
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
I don’t know about you but the weather today is— to put it nicely— a bit rough. Instead of staying home with a case of the rainy day blues I decided to head over to Dog Habitat and meet a few of their newest adoptable cuties. They definitely made me smile and I am certain you will too. Without further ado here they are!
First up, we have Sasha. She is an eight month old Staffordshire Terrier mix rescued from the Center for Animal Care and Control. She’s a bit shy but nonetheless very sweet. I’ll let Jay take it from here.
Next up we have Monkey. Not only is he too is a Staffie mix rescued from the Center For Animal Care and Control but he lives up to his name! It was very difficult to shoot a photograph of Monkey because he was more interested in giving puppy love than aping for the camera— as you’ll see!
For those of you who fancy furkids of the more diminutive variety I present for your Saturday afternoon entertainment this sweet pair of Chihuahua/Jack Russell terrier mixes: Milo (as seen above) and his more outgoing brother Hootie.
Last up, a little something for the cat lovers. A comely one year old chap named Westly. Not only is he very friendly, but he sports some, um, interesting assets.
Those of you who care to know more about the “markings” referenced in the previous video can click here for the reveal. Anyone who is interested in providing a loving home to any of these lovely (and loving) furkids should contact Dog Habitat via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org.

Found On Freeman Street: A Very Special Kitty
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
In the hopes of a repeat of Socks’s triumphant return to his rightful owner I present to you this found cat flier from Manhattan Avenue. No gender is indicated but I seriously doubt there are many black cats with extra toes running amok on Freeman Street. If you know to whom this lad (or lass) belongs please contact his (or her) good Samaritan at the above-listed telephone number. Thanks!

UPDATE, March 16, 2010: I have been told this kitty is safely back at home! Anne writes:
Kitty, temporary named “Bathroom Cat”, was claimed by his owner on the first floor of the building the next day (March 10). Bathroom cat was awesome and fat. And that is that.
LAST GASP: Socks Has Been Found!
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
Okay, I was going to call it an early night— but then I received this email. It is too cool NOT to pass along ASAP. Remember a cat by the name of Socks whose flier I posted yesterday? Well, he’s safe and sound at home! His person, a lady named Genia, recounts how this wonderful happening came to pass:
Hi Miss Heather:
It was my lost cat flyer that you posted on your blog. I wanted to thank you so much because, nothing short of a miracle, it worked! The persons who found Socks, back on Feb. 13, about ten blocks away on Humboldt, saw the photo on your blog today, and called me and sent a pic of Socks, and indeed it was him. A young Polish woman, named Adriana and her family, took him in two days after he was missing. She said he was sitting at the doorstep to her building, looking cold and sad, as if he was waiting to be let in. Bless the people of Greenpoint who look after the animals in the neighborhood. I am so relieved to know that he was well taken care of for these past three weeks just when the weather was so brutal. So some happy news due to your championing of local causes, big and small.
All best, Genia Gould, Williamsburg Greenpoint News + Arts
Thanks for sharing this Genia. It made my day!
