Urban Fur: Beating The Heat

I am not certain if anyone has bothered to conduct such a study, but I suspect Manhattan Avenue (where this handsome fellow can be found) has one of the highest concentrations of bodega cats per capita in this borough— and perhaps the entire city!

Urban Fur: A Cat For All Seasons

I have no word as to what this handsome chap’s name is but he can be found patrolling his place of employment: Four Seasons Discount on Manhattan Avenue.

Urban Fur: Shy

This little one (with some amazing markings and gorgeous green eyes) wasn’t interested in coming out for a nice head scratch but he (she?) was too damned cute not to post here. Closing on some cat-related news I am pleased to report that Spiff is safely back home with her people! Stephanie writes:

Heather,

We found her! Two guys on Dupont and McGuinness had her – they saw the sign at Pets on the Run and called Sean around 9:30 tonight. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU again!

YAY!

Something Neat!

(Or: Miss Heather Gets A Present)

Last night I swung by Dan Witz’s book signing at Spoonbill & Sugartown and at long last got to meet a Flickr “friend” of mine in person: an incredibly talented chap named Drew.

And he came bearing gifts! For those of you who are wondering, the furkid depicted in these lovely paintings is none other than Jerzy! I showed them to him.

He did not seem terribly impressed.

Then again I was reminded this morning that Jerzy has, how shall we say, a rather discerning palate.

I can’t honestly say wadded up tissues, hair and used Q-Tips are my cup of tea— but to each their own. Here’s a slide show of Drew’s other work: a series of “Pickle Houses”. Enjoy!

Thanks again, Drew. The Mister and I love your thoughtful gift— even if it’s “subject” doesn’t!

Urban Fur: Larry Gets An Apprentice…

(and he’s none too happy about it)

Despite the fact he has recently been divested of his “manhood”, spends most of the day sleeping (which I envy) and is spoon fed by his “mom”, Neer, Larry has achieved a certain reputation in the neighborhood. That being the local “bad ass”. You see, when not sleeping, eating or overseeing the fruit stand out front Larry likes to patrol his domain. The word on the street is he will put both cats and dogs in their place. Larry, it would seem, is an equal opportunity bully.

So naturally when this jackass urged his pug to make the acquaintance of Larry (presumably because he thought a dog would scare a cat and that would be funny) I took interest. The pup did his master’s bidding. Larry fixed him with a stare and held his ground. The pup quickly retreated. So it goes in the furban jungle of Greenpoint.

What has led to Larry’s recent protectiveness of his “territory”, you ask? Perhaps the reason lies at home?

For reasons unclear this little one found his way to Larry’s place of employment/enjoyment.

AJ, as I will call him (I checked— yeah, I’m a pussy perv), is damned cute…

and immensely curious about his new surroundings.

What the future holds for AJ has yet to be determined— but I suspect it will involve a vet visit and neutering when he is old enough. In the meantime don’t mess with Larry. As a new “dad” he has a lot on his mind right now.

At Large In Greenpoint: Spiff

I just received this the above photograph of Spiff the cats from her very upset owner, Stephanie. She writes:

Heather,

Our 12 year old cat just escaped from our car on Greenpoint and Leonard Street between Manhattan Avenue and Franklin Street (My boyfriend ran out of gas, chaos ensued, cat jumped out the car window.) I am hoping she is still in that area, but she might try to get back to our place on Franklin between Green and Huron. Would you mind posting her picture and a plea for people to contact us if they spot her? Her name is Spiff. She has grey stripes, a white chin and green eyes. She has a zitty thing on her chin right now from the food bowl. She is very sweet.

If anyone has seen Spiff please contact Stephanie via email at: stephanie (dot) lawkins (at) gmail (dot) com

Thanks!

There’s so much going on here that I like I will refrain from listing them. This photograph was taken by Carnade.

Urban Fur: No Littering

When I first encountered this tree pit I found its construction, well, curious.

Then I quickly came to the realization there was a watch cat on duty.

Those of you who head over the Van Dam Street be warned: there will be no litter bugging on this guy’s (or gal’s) watch!

Has Anyone Seen Javi?

Earlier today a reader commented that north Brooklyn seems to have a lot of lost cats of late. If my inbox is any indication, this would definitely appear to be case. Tania, who brought the handsome chap to the the left to my attention writes:

Hi Miss Heather,

hope you are doing well! My wonderful neighbor’s cat went missing on Sunday night on the corner of North 5th and Bedford Ave, I hate to bug you but was hoping if you had a chance you could post this on your site, it would be greatly appreciated. She is very very upset and is going crazy looking for Javier.

Included in Tania’s email was a link to an advertisement on Craigslist enlisting help for Javi’s safe return. It reads as follows:

LOST: All Black male cat, about 4 years old. Responds to Javier or Javi (“ha-vee”). Short hair but with a big fluffy tail and exceptionally large head. Has a red collar with a red heart rabies tag from Pennsylvania animal hospital. Last seen in the building 132 North 5th St (at Bedford) Sunday AM, June 20. 4th floor. He’s very trusting and loving so may have wandered out of the house and into someone else’s care for the time being, as it was very hot!! May have left if the door was accidentally left open by a guest or have escaped out the window onto the neighboring balcony. Either way, he is an indoor cat (does have his claws though he never uses them) and he never wanders far on the few occasions he got out before – is scared of being outside alone. He has large, beautiful yellow eyes.

If you have seen Javi (who it should be noted will reply rather vocally to his name) or know of his whereabouts please contact his person, Caitlin, via email at: caitlingutekunst (at) gmail (dot) com

Thanks!
