Urban Fur: New Arrival At The 99 Cent Store

This weekend the Mister and I found a most unusual item in front of this yours trulys  favorite 99 Cent Store.

This little lass. Concerned, I brought her inside the store and asked if she happened to be under their employ. The look on the cashier’s face said it all: a most definite yes. After explaining I found her outside, I inquired as to what this, Greenpoint’s newest shop cat, name was. Her answer was as follows:

Philip.

You realize this cat is a female?

I replied. To wit the cashier told me she was quite aware of this and explained she had initially given this cat a Chinese name— but a customer pointed out that folks hereabouts would have trouble pronouncing it. This person, in turn, said this cat’s name should be Philip— and it stuck.

You need to get more with the times.

A customer, an older gentleman, chimed in.

“You’re right”, I replied, “it is the 21st century after all”.

Oh yeah, my name is Mary.

He added. So there have you.

Urban Fur: Welcome Home!

Today on Grattan Street I saw— or make it heard— this rather indignant cutie.

I asked the above gentleman what her story was and he told me. Her name is Angel and today he brought her to her new “home”: his!

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that this scowl won’t last for long. In fact, I have a creeping suspicion this little lass with the not-so little feet (and mismatched eyes) is going to be very, very pampered!

A Greenpoint Blind Item

It is a well known fact that Larry (as seen at left) is without argument Greenpoint’s most famous the bodega cat. He likes to get around. While this usually entails keeping a particularly vigilant eye (or would that be paw?) over the canines which patronize his place of work and play (that being A. J. Farms) he has a horde of furry friends. In fact, if you look carefully on the left hand side of the counter at this establishment you will see a photo of him hanging out with a few of his homies. But did you know a particularly fetching feline hereabouts has become his regular breakfast date? I didn’t. It was put to me this way:

He comes in every morning, eats some of her food and sits with her. They cannot “do” anything*… but they like each other!

**Anyone know this mystery woman’s name and from where she hails? I do!

Spotted In Long Island City: Something Neat

November 15, 2010 ·

Today, dear readers, I could not resist stepping away from the keyboard and stepping out into the industrial hinterlands of southwestern Queens. This is something I have been meaning to do for sometime as I always find something interesting and unexpected. This morning was no different.

It was at the entrance of the footbridge under the Queens Midtown Expressway that I stumbled upon a garden.

The Footbridge Garden, to be precise.

Here are some marigolds.

As I continued exploring I quickly learned I was not alone. This bee was enjoying a little breakfast…

and it would appear this urban oasis is presided over by a custodian of the four-legged variety.

Make that a very well fed custodian of the four-legged variety! Those are some damned nice dishes. I wonder if he (she?) got them at Ikea?
