East Williamsburg Photo du Jour: Warning
If your name happens to be Thomas I would stay away from this bodega on Humboldt Street if I were you. You may not make it back home!

A Little Holiday Cheer From East Williamsburg
I have a confession to make: today I woke up in a ROTTEN mood. I have no idea why. I just did. Perhaps it was pre-holidaze malaise? Who knows. Sometimes these things just happen. Anyhoo, I decided to shake off my surly attitude by going for a little walk. I’m glad I did, as it would appear I am not the only person with a chip on my shoulder.
You can always leave it the peeps over in good ol’ East Williamsburg to keep things real.
I call this shot “From Meserole Street With Love”.
The second sullen salvo of revolt I beheld today was to be found at 245 Frost Street (which, unlike many of its brethren, was busy at work today).
Sigmund Freud was once quoted as saying:
The first human who hurled an insult instead of a stone was the founder of civilization.
Welcome to civilization: the 245 Frost Street Condominiums.

From The New York Shitty Photo Pool: Sunset On Black Friday
As the Mister and I were knocking around Jackson Heights yesterday we noticed the absolutely breathtaking sunset. We were not able to get a photograph of it. Thankfully Greenpoint’s very own mugsniffer did. He writes:
View from my Greenpoint apartment, now marred by the bulky EDGE building along the waterfront.
Regardless it’s a damned nice photo. You can see more great Greenpoint imagery a la mugsniffer by clicking here.

A Little Holiday Shopping
After spending at least five hours in the kitchen yesterday and knowing full well I will be doing the same today suffice it to say yours truly is more than a little unmotivated. In any case follows are few upcoming holiday shopping events which might be of interest.
I have been long remiss in giving Tommy and Roy (AKA: the Alter boys) a shout out. Today I wish to correct this egregious oversight on my part by passing along the deets about their upcoming “Thanksgiving Weekend Sale”. And oh yeah, pointing out that I am totally in love with this item which I found on their web site. Check it out!
20% Off Sale At Alter
November 28-30th, 2008
140 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222
This item comes courtesy of Bitchcakes. Cafe Grumpy will be hosting another “Hearts & Crafts” affair this holiday season. Hopefully I’ll make it to this one. If the wares for sale are even a fraction as nifty as their flier I am certain I will NOT be disappointed!
Hearts & Crafts Affair
December 6 & 7, 2008, Noon – 6:00 p.m.
Cafe Grumpy
193 Meserole Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11222

But back to events I have attended in previous years.
I purchased some incredibly fun items last year’s holiday craft fair. I will probably do so again this year. Take my word for it: this event is worth schlepping over to 195 Morgan Avenue.
Handmade Holiday Craft Fair
December 7, 2008, Noon-7:00 p.m.
3rd Ward
195 Morgan Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11237
Last up, the Gift On Grand will be throwing another giftstravaganza at Secret Project Robot. My advice about this event: ARRIVE EARLY. It gets packed.

Miscellaneous Foodstuffs
I spied this menu in the window of a laundromat yesterday. Thinking this was a new restaurant in/near the ‘hood I grabbed a menu. It isn’t. Here’s the scoop.
ANYTIME is a website: www.anytimeny.com. This site (which appears to be in development) not only offers to deliver food, but smokes and beer as well. Their hours are 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. daily and their delivery zone (as culled from their web site) is as follows:
It should also be noted that they accept credit cards (VISA, AmEx, Mastercard and Discover): $15.00 minimum for delivery.
If and/or when any of you, dear readers, give this business a whirl let me know. I’m quite curious to say the least! And oh yeah, you get a free soft drink with your first “web purchase”.
ANYTIME: Late night food, booze & smokes

Next up, (and a note of somewhat well-substantiated intelligence), the mastermind(s) behind the Endless Summer taco truck which graces the intersection of North 7th Street and Bedford Avenue is going to expand to some more permanent digs…
IN GREENPOINT.
Tacos & More is the name.
668 Manhattan Avenue is the address.
And (718) 346-2626 will be their phone number.
It is slated to open “next year”. Given that that our current one is almost over I imagine the wait will not be too long.
Last up, my buddy Larry da Junkman loves all things cheap. Especially coffee. I love wine (a hearty glass of claret on a cold day is noting short of sheer bliss). So you can imagine my delight when I checked out the new Porto Rico coffee shop he tipped me off to only find a new(ish) wine shop to boot!
Porto Rico, regrettably, was closed. But I did take a looksee at blue angel.
All in all, it was pretty neat. They had an interesting selection, much of their stock was quite affordable (READ: At/under $15.00 a bottle) and a very handsome chap named “Dude” mans the premises.
Had there not been a screaming child * on the premises I would have stuck around and made a purchase. Methinks I might take them up on delivery instead: blue angel delivers “throughout Williamsburg, Bushwick and Greenpoint” daily from noon to 9:00 p.m. One bottle up to TWO CASES. You know, for those extra special occasions.

To close on a somewhat related note, X-tra Discount is back! Their new store will be located just across the street from their old digs (which is now WaMu). Seekers of affordable housewares in Greenpoint rejoice.
Hallelujah!

UPDATE, 4:18 p.m.: I just received a very nice email from one of the peeps behind ANYTIME. Jessica writes:
Hello Miss Heather. I hope you are having a lovely Monday. It’s nice that it warmed up a little today. I LOVE what you do and I’m a very avid reader of your posts, thus I was overcome with excitement to see that today you wrote about my restaurant, Anytime, and so I figured I should tell you a little bit more about us.
The original owners opened shop in ‘99 and were on North 6th Street until my partners and I built a sparkling new kitchen on Skillman Ave in August. We are working on making a spectacular eat-in restaurant and are delivering to all of Greenpoint and Williamsburg until 5 am every night, though we are closed f’ Thanksgiv’n and Christmas. The sad news..L.. is that we are still awaiting our new liquor license for the new space, so there won’t be any beer deliveries until early next year. The good news however, is that we just started an amazing new menu last week (which you saw) and which I am very excited about. Our chef, Berty Richter (previously of Lamb & Jaffy) makes delicious hummus daily from scratch and we have added some real gems to the menu. My favorites are the Soy Honey Ginger Wings, Cuban Toasted Sandwich and Pumpkin Cheesecake!
I really do hope that you and Mister Heather will give us a try, and let me know how you like it.
Thanks for posting about us and have a great Thanksgiving!
As “Chip” would say to “Dale”:
No, Thank YOU! 😉
*It should be noted that said child belonged to a client, not the proprietors.

How To Beat The High Cost Of Living…
Williamsburg style!
If there’s something I have to hand to my buddy down south (and by that I mean Brooklyn11211) it is this: he knows what I like!

This seems like something you’d be able to make something of. I assume they’ve named their product after the colonial Williamsburg, not the post-modern one. Not that either makes sense when you’re branding a pop-up camper.
This is not your run-of-the-mill Green–point or Bushwick four wheeling digs, dear readers. This is none other than the 2008 Fleetwood Williamsburg model! It sleeps six and is priced to own at measly $16,463.80 $13,499!
Amenities include:
- A factory installed 16,000 BTU Furnace with electric ignition and power roof system
- Light weight easy to pull, aluminum framed, new smooth sides (It’s like Scarano at a fraction of the price!)
- Integrated high pressure slide out outside stove
- Aluminum wheels
- Power Roof Lift
- Slide out Dinette eat in kitchen and last, but hardly least…
A 12 volt flushing cassette toilet! It doesn’t get much more “retro” (and therefore hip) than this folks: cassettes are the new LPs— especially whilst flushing on Flushing Avenue! As my father always said (and by this I mean never):
The family that shits together stays together.
I am certain this great “starter home” won’t be on the market for long. Parties interested in maintaining that valuable 11211 zip code without paying 11211 prices should point and click their way over to RV USA without delay. The only thing you have to lose is your dignity!*

*If you actually consider living in a trailer in Williamsburg as being a viable option the previous caveat is a moot point. You lost it a long, LONG time ago.
A Rocknapping In East Williamsburg?
A couple of months ago my buddy Kevin Walsh over at Forgotten-NY shot me an interesting email. It read as follows:
At Morgan Ave. a bit north of Rock St you will find a huge rock, about 5 feet tall. Apparently this is the rock that Rock Street is named for.
I mention this anecdote because when I walked by last weekend I noticed something amiss. Namely, no rock.
After I took the above photograph a woman entering an adjacent apartment building noted it was a beautiful day to take pictures. I asked her if she knew what happened to the rock which once graced this spot. She said she honestly had not noticed it was gone. This of course poses a few questions:
- Why was this rock removed?
- When was this rock removed?
- HOW was this rock removed?
I seriously doubt it was hauled off and sold for scrap (although I suppose anything is possible nowadays). Thoughts anyone?

East Williamsburg Photo du Jour: Bogart Street Biathlon
Whenever I want a little excitement I head over to East WIlliamsburg. No other neighborhood —save perhaps my own —will make you shake your head and mutter to yourself
What the fuck?
with the sheer frequency this place place will. Which brings me to something I found on Bogart Street recently.
It would appear that someone decided to engage in a little physical fitness.

Boobification Photo du Jour: Patience
Mister Heather (or any of my friends) will attest to the fact that I am neither well endowed with titties nor patience. This never bothered me much as both the previous preclude using power tools with total abandon. Conversely, when I do, indeed, “plan” something and pull it off they are pleasantly surprised. The key to success is keeping expectations low. That way you never fail. Which brings me to this.
I have been casing this frog on Flushing Avenue for months. Usually this playground is filled with children. Yesterday it was filled with surly Parks employees sweeping up leaves. Once we came to a silent understanding (that being: leaving each other well enough alone) I finally got my opportunity.
It was totally worth it.

Bushwick Photos du Jour: Beta Spaces
Today I had the good fortune to stumble upon Beta Spaces in full swing. Not only did I bump into Adrian of Brit in Brooklyn (who is an incredibly nice chap, by the way) but I saw some great art to boot! Here are a few of my faves.
Reading the Sunday paper on Flushing Avenue.
Just look at this sun-drenched living room! I wonder how much this phat pad “in the heart of Williamsburg”* goes for a month? $2,000? More?
Behold, the Grattan Street “Heprat”!
Orange genius!
Shel Silverstein once wrote of The Giving Tree. Williamsburg has “The Finger Building“. Behold the East Williamsburg “Finger Tree”!
