Form The New York Shitty Inbox: Humans of New York

This item was brought my attention by a very nice lady named Donna. What is Humans of New York about, you ask? Here’s an explanation of this project as given by its founder, Brandon Stanton:

Humans of New York is a multi-year project to construct a photographic census of the city of New York.   The team consists of one man, who walks the streets several hours a day, looking for interesting people, and taking their photograph.  Currently, the project is in the gathering phase.  Nearly 1,400 portraits have been collected thus far.  The goal is 10,000.  Photos are uploaded as they are collected, and arranged by date.  When a substantial body of portraits has been gathered, they will be grouped by neighborhood and displayed geographically.  Upon completion, an interactive map will show every neighborhood in New York through the faces of its inhabitants.

This is some seriously neat stuff, folks. Check it out!

THIS SUNDAY: 6th Annual Memorial Ride & Walk

This item was brought to my attention by a lady named Leah. This upcoming Sunday, March 13, the folks behind ghostbikes.org will be conducting their 6th Annual Memorial Ride & Walk. Follows is a very general outline of their proposed schedule:

Queens: 12:00 p.m., northwest corner of Juniper Park, Juniper Blvd. N. & Lutheran Ave
Bronx: 1:15 p.m, E. Fordham Rd & Webster Ave (4 to Fordham Rd, B, D to Grand Concourse or MetroNorth to Fordham Road)
Staten Island: 1:30 p.m., Everything Goes Book Cafe, 208 Bay St between Victory and Hannah
Brooklyn: 1:40 p.m., Linton Park (1 block north of 2/3/4/5 to Van Siclen)
Manhattan: 3:00 p.m., Pelham Fritz Rec Center, Marcus Garvey Park, Mount Morris Park West (just west of 5th) at 122nd St
Convergence: 5:00 p.m., Brooklyn Borough Hall

I have been told a starting point in Greenpoint has been added: 1:00 p.m., on the steps of St Anthony’s, Greenpoint Avenue & Milton St (1/2 block from Greenpoint G stop). The rain/snow date for this event is March 20th. You can view updated information regarding this multi-borough event by checking out Ghost Bikes’s web site.

Closing on a related note, I would like to remind everyone that one of our own, Emilie Gossiaux, was seriously injured by a hit and run driver October of last year. You can read more about this amazing young woman, her recovery and tender a donation towards her (copious) medical expenses by clicking here.

This item has been brought to my attention by my buddy down at BK Southie. He writes:

Heather,

The below story is posting on my site at 7am on Friday. But I know you both love a good blogger-hearts-the-newspaper-that-copies-from-him story, so I’m sending you the early edition.

Follows is the introducttion/a teaser:

Dear Community Newspaper Group,

Thank you for reading.

I genuinely mean that. I’m not bitter at all about the story and feature ideas you’ve taken from this site without credit. In fact, I really think that it’s fantastic that a mere amateur writer such as myself can make such a meaningful contribution to a cog in the News Corp engine…

Yes dear readers, it would appear my friend down south has had the pleasure of being poached. Repeatedly. Do take a moment to give his tome a read. It’s a hoot!

Earlier today I stumbled upon an incoming link to my site. Curious, I checked it out. I have no idea what this woman is writing about (I am not fluent in Hebrew) , but the images she posted (including the above one) from Dane Shitagi’s The Ballerina Project made my day. Check ’em out!

Something Neat: Past Objects

As some of you might recall a woman stated at last week’s 94th Precinct Community Council meeting (in regards to the proposed homeless shelter at 400 McGuinness Boulevard) that “Greenpoint has been dumped on for years”. What she probably didn’t realize at the time is in how very correct she was. In fact, it could be argued that Greenpoint is, quite literally, a dump: much of what we know as Garden Spot today is landfill. Landfill = someone else’s trash.

I was reminded about this when I perused through the above book: Past Objects. What is this tome, you ask? I will tell you: it is a rather lavish photo journal/diary of objects found by amateur archeologist Scott Jordan while excavating various sites around our fair city. This includes a formidable number of finds from the Garbage, um, Garden Spot (and yes, Williamsburg)! If you like “stuff” and New York City history (and I do) you may very well enjoy this book. Follows are a few shots to give you an idea of what you can expect.

Old Shoes

The old metal horse was found in Greenpoint!

These Revolutionary War era items were found in Manhattan.

And lots and lots of bottles.

All in all I really enjoyed this book— I am not just saying this because I got it for free from the publisher (I did). It should also be noted that the first copy I was mailed was stolen— and not returned (Yes, this has happened). So obviously somebody else in the Garden Spot likes it as well Those of you who are interested in perusing this book will be pleased to know I have spoken to Jen over at our very own Word Books and she has placed an order for two! They should arrive next Wednesday.
