This vision (which hails from Hooper Street and Borinquen Place— its address per the Department of Buildings is 395 Hooper Street lest anyone is curious) is without argument one of the finest examples of Bloomblight yours truly has ever encountered. Not surprisingly it has a standing Stop Work Order. I would hazard to say that the owner of this property has, in fact, obeyed it. Perhaps a little too well. In any case, it bears all the characteristics I have come to expect from a derelict construction site (and I can assure you, gentle readers, yours truly has grown to be quite picky— this is because I have a vast selection from which to choose). To name a few:
- A collapsed construction fence
- Ample amounts of detritus
- Signs of habitation (I confess I am quite envious of the office chairs— but not so much so as to venture in and take one)
- Graffiti (Amusingly enough, the piece by $howta is arguably its only redeeming quality.) And my personal favorite…
- an inspired, if futile, use of “Caution” tape.
Truly magnificent, I must say. I suppose it will come as a surprise to no one that recently a complaint was filed regarding this property.
It’ll be interesting to see if/when any action will be taken. Hopefully this blog post will help serve to push things forward. Otherwise (and one a somewhat related note) I have at long last posted some updates regarding my snow globe project. These you can see here. Methinks this bad boy just made it to the list…

See that grey stuff? That’s Manhattan.
Yup.
Once again: Yup.
One more time: Yup.
The good news: the feral felines which North Brooklyn Cats (lovely ladies all) trapped, neutered and released appear to be doing well!
The bad news: the park bench* and fence** gracing this piece of much-needed “open space” are still submerged.
What’s more, they now have a most unusual urban artifact to give them company.
A safe.
Make that an EX safe.
Welcome to Greenpoint.
Repeat after me:
Graffiti— not landlord neglect; definitely not a lack of investment and especially NOT enforcement of the law by our fair city— is ruining the neighborhood…

Yes, gentle readers, stuff such is this is why Community Board 1 Brooklyn is among the dirtiest in the entire city. One would think with an unpaid fine of $4,000 these folks could afford to hire someone with a weed whacker, Then again— why should they? There are clearly no consequences for their actions. I’ve written it before and I’ll write it again:
if the leaders of our community want to attract tourists, perhaps they should crackdown on speculators/developers who do not maintain their properties, illegally occupy the sidewalk and/or street with their “accoutrements”*, etc.? Is it just me or are our electeds sort of missing the forest for the trees here?
In the hope of getting the point across I am initiating a new feature: Community Board 1 Bloomblight of the week. To this end I have created a photo pool on Flickr exclusively for this endeavor. It goes without saying I will also take submissions via email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Please be sure to provide a street address. Now let’s get this party started north Brooklynites!
