Borough Of Lost Pets

grattancat

Just as was the case yesterday I went out for another walk to enjoy the lovely fall weather. I followed my usual m.o., e.g.; taking subway somewhere (in today’s case the Jefferson Street stop of the L) and walking home. This may not be everyone’s idea of a good time but I enjoy it. Today was no exception save one disturbing trend: the numerous lost pet fliers I found along the way. Here they are— along with a few furkids who were lucky enough to be found by some very kind humans.

FLUSHING AVENUE

FOUNDKITTEN

Notes/observations: I found a number of these fliers around the Morgan Avenue stop of the L so it is safe to presume he was probably found in this area.

GRATTAN STREET

meatball

Notes/observations: Judging from the condition of the flier I’d say this one has been around for a while. I found it around the corner from where Meatball calls home: Roberta’s Pizzeria. If you have seen Meatball— the coolest named dog EVER— please call his people at the above telephone number.

BOGART STREET

founddog

Notes/observations: This is disturbing as hell.

HERBERT STREET

littleman

Notes/observations: This one hails from a little closer to home: Herbert at Monitor Street. If you have seen Little Man (which happens to a nickname for one of yours truly’s felines) you know what to do.

CALYER STREET

bella

Notes/observations: Although the flier was found at Calyer and Eckford Street, Bella was last seen at Manhattan Avenue and India Street. Judging the wording of this flier I have to wonder if Bella was lost or stolen. Stealing pets for resale (or reward money) is a cottage industry in Brooklyn. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: KEEP AN EYE ONE YOUR PETS. DO NOT LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED. PEOPLE CAN AND WILL TAKE THEM!!!

In closing I will leave you with this lost dog alert from my friends at District Dog.

Bushwick Inlet Watch: Progress

This weekend the Mister and I took his parents to Pop’s Clothing— and in so doing I stumbled upon a most pleasant surprise.

oct3

The owner of this property has begun removing all the overgrowth and garbage. Sort of.

trash

The box with the dead rat is still there.

critter

And now he has a friend! I made it a point this out to my mother and father in law. When I brought the sorry state of Bushwick Inlet up with the owner of Pop’s he had a number of interesting observations to share. Among them:

  1. This is a chronic problem.
  2. He was once almost ticketed for littering when he attempted to clean up this property (because he couldn’t take it anymore). He was told in no uncertain terms that he cannot mow his neighbor’s yard.
  3. There is a homeless encampment on this site.

Sure enough, he was right.

Curious to see if the clean-up at Bushwick Inlet was a fluke (or a figment of my imagination) I returned yesterday to see what’s shaking.

Sure enough, they had cleared a little more. At this (glacial) pace I imagine they’ll be done in a week.

The “box-o-fun” is still there— as is the dead rat. Albeit a little worse for wear.

deadthing

Yummy.

BEWARE2

Don’t less this pup’s stern expression fool you: he is a great big cream puff! After taking the above picture he licked the bejeezus out of my hand— with his owner’s permission, of course. One should never, ever pet a dog without his “person” being present!

Okay. So I have given everyone the good news that 648 Humboldt Street has started construction on this year’s fright fest. Well, I have even more Halloween happiness to impart: their friendly rivals at 97 Russell Street are up to some ghoulish goodness of their own!

Some of you might recall the lady behind this wonderful display got off to a late start last year. This was because she took a trip to Egypt!

She has gotten off to a much earlier start this year…

and it’s looking good!!!

If or when the opportunity arises do swing by and see this wonderful display unfold for yourself. If you happen to catch her working be sure to say “hi” and thank her for making Halloween a lot more fun for all of us. She’s a really sweet lady!

Greenpoint Halloween Watch: It Has Begun!

October 5, 2009 ·

October has found its way to the Garden Spot. Since the weather was absolutely stunning I decided to table the blog and go for a walk. On a lark I decided to swing by my favorite house on Humboldt Street to see if they have commenced work on this year’s Halloween extravaganza. For those of you who are not in the know this is yours truly’s favorite holiday of the year.

ARGHHHHHH

648a

They have! What’s more, I wasn’t the only person to notice that something very exciting is going on at 648 Humboldt Street.

Female passerby: Wow, this wasn’t here yesterday.
Me: Yup, and they’re just getting started.
F.P.: Yesterday I saw an inflatable ghost and I said to him (pointing to male companion) “Wow, a Halloween yard”! He said, “That isn’t a Halloween yard. I’ll show you a Halloween yard!”
Me: These people go all out. Wait until they bring out the guy who vomits up blood. He’s my favorite.
F.P.: Do they do this kind of thing for Christmas?
Me: Yeah, but…
F.P.: It is not as good?
Me: It’s good alright. They make it look like a ginger bread house and have a full-sized Santa and Mrs. Claus. It’s cute. But I don’t like cute. It like (pointing to ghouls on the second floor) this.

To refresh your memory dear, readers, as to the glory of that is 648 Humboldt Street on All Hallow’s Eve I have resurrected a slide show of last year’s masterpiece. Enjoy!

I have much more Halloween goodness from the Garden Spot to share— so stay tuned!
