This winsome kitty resides on Clifford Place where, in more temperate weather, he (she?) can be found with a very real feline companion!

Crosstown Local Photo Du Jour: ENOUGH!

Not content with sending forth an army of canvassers to troll north Brooklyn on Sunday evenings to hit unsuspecting citizen’s buzzers, spewing forth enough printed material to leave a carbon footprint the size of Texas and— lest we forget— there are the never-ending television commercials; Mayor Mike has taken the good news about his run for a third term to the G train. En Espanol, no less.

For the love of god, make it stop.

P.S.: The more eagle-eyed among you might recognize where this photograph of Michael Bloomberg being warm and fuzzy with the peasantry was taken. If not, I’ll tell you: Keap Street at South 3rd Street in Williamsburg. This intersection is located not too far from the infamous “Broadway Triangle”. (Insert irony points here.)

New York Shitty Day Ender: A New Bodega For North Greenpoint

In addition to learning the good news about “El Blablazo”, I was pleased as punch to see the long-vacant space at 1068 Manhattan Avenue finally has a tenant. What’s more, it will be a bodega (or as I like to call them “deligros”).

minimart

Anyone who lives north of Freeman Street will attest that is there is a dearth of quality grocery stores (and many other necessities, like laundromats, for example) in far north Greenpoint. Hopefully Mini Mart will be a first step in redressing this. When will it open, you ask? I do not know— but I am going to keep swinging by until I can find someone to ask!

UPDATE, October 16, 2009: This will be a 24 hour bodega. Huzzah!

Winding this dreary day down are a few images I took yesterday at the Garden Spot’s house for all seasons: 57 Franklin Street. The amount of work (not too mention money) this woman puts into decorating her house (which she does every holiday) is truly to be admired. I have a confession to make, though: although her Halloween decor never disappoints I prefer what she does for Easter!

Greenpoint Tree Pit Watch: 1074 Manhattan Avenue Kicks It Up A Notch

October 15, 2009 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

There’s no two ways about it: today was (and still is) a nasty, cold and wet day. This afternoon (after some serious procrastination) I bundled up and started my “commute” to the junk shop. Sort of. As I was crossing Manhattan Avenue I saw something in the corner of my eye that so piqued my curiousity I simply had to go in for a closer look.

blablazo

The guys at 1074 Manhattan Avenue (who as some of you may recall were inspired by their neighbors at 1071 to create their own tree pit seating) have spiced things up with a fresh coat of gray paint, some red tinsel and a sign reading “EL BLABLAZO”. Naturally, I had to get to the bottom of this.

Me: Hey, what up with the tinsel and the sign?
Group of Dudes Hanging Out: ?
Me: I really like it— but my Spanish isn’t as good as it used to be. Could you tell me what this means?
GoDHO: (after some conferring one speaks) It means someone who talks too much. You know, as “blah blah”.
Me: Oh, I got you. That’s the story of my life.
GoDHO: (laughter) You see, this bench is a place for people to sit and talk…
Me: and sometimes they talk too much, right?
GoDHO: Exactly!

This, dear readers, is yet another reason why I live in the Garden Spot of the Universe.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Dog Habitat Gets A Very Special Caller

spooky

I recently bumped into Rob Maher one of the minds behind Unleash Brooklyn and Dog Habitat. He told me about something really neat which happened recently. It involves the above lass. Her name is Spooky and this is her story:

Spooky found us. No, really! She walked up the stairs and sat on our front door just before the temperature dropped this fall. She is about six months old. She is extremely friendly, but in need of some personal attention and lots of love.

Anyone interested in learning more about this street smart Greenpoint girlie— or wants to make your home Spooky’s permanent haunt— please shoot the guys (and gals) of Dog Habitat an email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org. They can also be reached via telephone at: (347) 601-8678.

Thanks!
