New York Shitty Day Ender: Free Willy!
Jay Lombard (who forwarded me the above photographs of a very happy and lucky lad named Willy) writes:
Heather – At last! Dog Habitat Rescue has a dog available for adoption! Meet Willy – he was stray who was taken to the Brooklyn animal care & control shelter and was within hours of being euthanized. He’ll be staying at Unleash: Brooklyn until we find him a permanent home. Look for Willy at the front of the parade at tomorrow’s Halloween party in McGolrick park.
Thanks for sharing the good news with us, Jay! As he indicates in the above email anyone interested in meeting Willy and giving him the loving home which has so eluded him can make his acquaintance at District Dog’s Halloween Parade tomorrow at McGolrick Park. Here’s the 411 for those of who are not in the know:
3rd Annual District Dog Halloween Parade
October 31, 2009 starting at 1:00 p.m.
McGolrick Park
Brooklyn, New York 11222
And on that note, dear readers, I am calling it a day. Have a wonderful pre-Halloween evening!

It doesn’t get much scarier in my book than this jack o’ lantern which commemorates our very own G train. This little guy hails from the Garden Spot’s very own Brouwerij Lane and sports four very festive companions.

Greenpoint Photos du Jour: Thank You For Not Smoking
It would appear that someone on Manhattan Avenue has fallen off the wagon— or even our parking meters are in need a nic fix.
Ah, Greenpoint…

New York Shitty Videos du Jour: Squid on a Stick
A great many interesting items surface at the junk shop. I suppose this is to be expected given the merchandise comes from estate sales, apartment clean-outs and storage facility auctions. In my experience the weirdest (and creepiest) items we have opened a box to encounter are as follows:
- Bottles of holy water with skin shavings in them.
- A funerary urn— occupied by someone who has departed this mortal coil.
- An incinerated woman’s nightgown with a sandwich encased in it. By Larry’s guesstimation these were about ten years old.
But the previous macabre examples are the exception— not the rule. Nonetheless culinary items do on occasion darken our doorstop. Today it was a box of Chinese herbs and what can best be described as a “squid on a stick”. Now toss in that Larry da Junkman has started a diet and therefore is a little daft for lack of caffeine and carbohydrates. Hilarity ensued.
Now jump forward to ten minutes later. Despite employing Febreeze AND aerosol air freshener the store was beginning to smell like beef jerky that had been marinated in someone’s ass. Something had to be done. And Larry got a very evil notion.
This post goes out to Catherine at Papasito’s for being a good sport!

I have to admit, I’m pretty darned disappointed with the jack o’ lanterns to be found around Brooklyn this year. That is not to suggest I haven’t seen some cute ones. I have. But living in Greenpoint for ten years has predisposed me towards to grotesque (and downright gross). Luckily enough I found a couple of choice specimens today in the 11211. Here they are.
South 1st Street
This is more like it!
Powers Street
Ordinarily I frown upon illustrated pumpkins, but the sheer ingenuity employed here is truly noteworthy and deserving of a New York Shitty shout-out. Great job!

P.S.: I suppose no post about puking pumpkins would be complete without bringing back this oldie but goody from Halloween past which hailed from our very own Humboldt Street.
Greenpoint Halloween Watch: Vodka
While not as extensive as other Halloweeniana I have featured here thus far, this tableau (which hails from Z & J Wine and Liquor) tickled my funny bone. If you look very carefully you’ll notice a bottle of Sobieski vodka has been placed in the skull’s mouth. Nice.
In closing, dear readers, something closely resembling the sun appears to be in the sky. Methinks I will go out for a while and reacquaint myself with it! More to come later today.

New York Shitty Day Starter: Big Money
I stumbled upon this most unusual piece of currency (and its creator, Christian Hooker) earlier this week on Norman Avenue. You can see more of his Dollar series (one of which graces the art collection of Russell Simmons!) by clicking here. Go ahead, he’s a really nice guy!

P.S.: On a related note, anyone care to guess where in Greenpoint the following can be found?
