Found In Blissville, Made In Greenpoint!

WATCHYOUSTEP

I found the above at the Van Dam Street yesterday. Needless to say I found its use (abuse) of grammar amusing. Upon closer inspection I found a nugget of Greenpoint goodness.

BROOKLYN VAULT LIGHT CO. 262 Monitor St. Brooklyn, N.Y.

It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten my Greenpoint geek on. Today I did. Here’s what 262 Monitor Street looks like nowadays.

262monitor

To say the least I was disappointed.* But I did find a few nifty items about Brooklyn Vault Light Company online. Here they are:

Industrial Progress

The above hails from the 120th Volume of American Architect. It would appear that I have stumbled upon a state-of-the-art coal hole cover! By 1921 standards, anyway.

And last, but hardly least, what would a piece of Greenpoint history be without a lawsuit? Involving high society, no less! From the March 13, 1921 edition of the New York Times:

*There are no sidewalks to speak of on Monitor between Greenpoint Avenue and Norman Avenue. Just a bunch of pot holes and a bunch of parked/idling cars mostly. Northside Car Service seems to be particularly fond of parking/hanging out on the “sidewalk” in this area.

TOMORROW: Balinese Dance at St. Cecilia’s

cuchifritaThis item (which is too damned interesting to resist posting) comes courtesy of my buddy Dizzy Swank. Per the Dame CuchiFrita’s Facebook announcement:

Come and see rare performance behind the woman known as Dame CuchiFrita. She will be performing traditional Balinese Dance that is centuries old , in a convent, about virgins… You will experience Bali in one evening as she will take you through her repertoire from contemporary to the oldest form of classical Balinese dance. If you have a love for centuries old traditions and love bending the rules, this show is for you. If you love Dame Cuchi on stage strutting her stuff and want to see her fully clothed and be transported to a different world, this one is for you too. If you love seeing modern dance juxtaposed w/traditional ethnic dance this is most definitely the show for you. This is part of AUNTS ROADSHOW, an evening of modern dance based performances that travels all around Brooklyn.

Check it out. It’s FREE!

Spotted On McGuinness Boulevard: Hay

LOTS OF HAY.

Greenstreets

mcguinness

I have no idea what this is about. Is this an attempt at an eco-friendly crash barrier or a feeding station for Roy and Trigger? I suppose only it’s creator knows for certain. I saw we toss in a few pumpkins and a scarecrow or two. McGuinness Boulevard could use some holiday cheer!

P.S.: While I’m on the subject of parks and open space does anyone know what is going on at Sgt. Dougherty Playground?

If I had to hazard a guess I’d say these are planters.

sgtdopark

Given this park’s rather lackluster location (READ: a trucker bomb’s toss from the BQE and the Kosciuszko Bridge) I suppose this is a positive development. Then again, taking into account that the only time I have seen a person at this playground it was a gentlemen named Jemal composing music on a saxophone (because he didn’t want to bother anyone) it makes me wonder how meaningful this addition will be. If a rose grows in Sgt. Dougherty Playground and no is around to smell it is it any less fragrant?

flier

When I found this flier on McGuinness Boulevard my curiosity was piqued. Naturally, I looked at their web site to get the 411:

Brooklyn Art Studios is a new artists space in the Greenpoint Industrial Center at 276 Greenpoint Avenue in Greenpoint Brooklyn. We are a collection of professional artists working in a wide range of media. We will be hosting Open Studio events twice a year, and look forward to joining forces with local artists and arts organizations to promote arts in the Greenpoint area.

This sounds to intriguing (and free!) to pass up. Check it out!

Jay (of Dog Habitat, who forwarded me these photographs) writes:

Found these – a pair of prosthetic legs – on the curb along Mcguinness and Broome St. Not one, but two legs. Maybe they were worn out after the marathon?

…A close up – you can see Millie inspecting the legs. I was walking her for a client when she discovered the limbs. Maybe she’s a cadaver sniffing dog?

Some of you might recall that this makes the second set of prosthetic legs that have been found on north Brooklyn’s streets this week. What gives?
