New York Shitty Video Du Jour: Meeting Nemo & More About The Huron Street Kittens
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, East Williamsburg, East Williamsburg Brooklyn, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
As I mentioned last week, a couple of my favorite north Brooklyn cat ladies (including the woman who is taking care of the Huron Street kittens) conducted an adoption event at Muddy Paws yesterday. I made it clear I planned to swing by. My purpose for doing so was twofold:
- The get the latest news on the Huron Street kittens
- To meet Nemo
I am pleased to report that the Huron Street Kittens are faring well! Lisa is still treating their eye infections (which is understandable) but they are eating on their own and, despite their humble and less than auspicious entrance in this world, are proving to be gourmands. They are thumbing their respective and very cute noses at dry food (which is less expensive), but are consuming wet food with gusto. Lisa also told me that after initially being leery of human contact (can you blame them?) they are learning to trust her. I for one think this is a terrific development. When the time and opportunity affords Lisa has promised me more pictures of these little ones. You can rest assured I will post them on New York Shitty.
As for point #2: yesterday afternoon I— at long last— made the acquaintance of another Greenpoint cutie. Nemo.
This winsome (and very inquisitive) guy hails from Russell Street and for reasons that are unclear became separated from his mother and litter mates at the tender age of one week. That is when he found his way into Lisa’s care. He has proven to be quite the early-adopter: not only is he eating wet food at four weeks but is also a stone cold killer. At least inasmuch as a two pound kitten can be as you will see. Enjoy!
Anyone interested in giving this amazing little guy a home should contact his foster/bottle mom Lisa at: lisavallez (at) gmail (dot) com. NOTE/CAVEAT: there is an adoption fee and application process. Landlord approval is mandatory.

P.S.: As for the identity of the good Samaritan who stepped forward and took the Huron Street kittens home. I met her last week. She is a truly amazing woman— could you possibly expect anything less? Her are a few facts about her:
- She was born and raised in San Francisco.
- She has lived in Greenpoint for one month (who says all noobs don’t care!). Prior to that she lived in Harlem.
- She likes Sidecars and Old Fashioneds. This impressed the Mister TREMENDOUSLY.
- She is a dancer who has worked in performance pieces by the renowned artist Mike Kelley.
- She is a yoga teacher at Greenpoint’s very own Good Yoga.
- She recently had a birthday.
The latter most became the object of some suspicion to her manager when she failed to arrive to work on time that fateful day. Her boss lady, Flannery, writes:
…She was on her way to teach a 7 am meditation class when I received a text telling me she was going to be late because she found some kittens in the road.
I’m embarrassed to say that it did occur to me that perhaps she was just running late and feeding me a line that she thought I might swallow with greater ease than “I’m late because I overslept after my birthday weekend bacchanal,” but either way I didn’t mind. No harm, no foul. We’ve all been there. But when she came to class and told us the story of kitten saving, and later that night at her dance class when she told us about the loss of one of the kittens, it was clear that she really was the right girl in the right place and the right time.We hear about people’s misdeeds so often, that I hope you might take a moment to highlight her beautiful act…
Done! Without further ado here is our mystery woman. If any of you happen see her during your Greenpoint ramblings, dear readers, please welcome Sarita to the neighborhood. She’s a keeper!
From The New York Shitty Inbox: In A Different Light
One of the joys of the junk shop (and there are many) is it has enabled me to meet lots of people. One such individual is a chap named Joe. A few weeks ago struck up a conversation with my boss (and buddy) Larry about monster movie hosts. As the conversation progressed he made it known that he was in the neighborhood taking photographs and wanted advice as to what to shoot. Without hesitation Larry and I said:
The Shit Tits.
We are of the belief that no visit to Greenpoint is complete without viewing this landmark in its resplendent bullet bra glory. Like it or hate it one had to admit it is one of the defining characteristics of our fair burgh. What’s more, I think it is pretty neat! Anyhoo, Joe and I exchanged information, I got busy and forgot about it. Until yesterday when Joe dropped me a line. He writes:
I was talking to Larry and you about Monster Movie hosts. After I wandered through Greenpoint and across to Queens, taking pictures all the way. Here’s the link.
Click the link I did. What I found was pretty darned cool!
A pair of Garden Spot sneaks.
Children at play.
And of course, our beloved Shit Tits.
All in all I found it refreshing to see our neighborhood from another person’s eyes. Those of you who have a moment should click here and peruse Joe’s photo set from his sojourn in the Garden Spot. It’s really neat!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Another Hit & Run?
It would appear that in the wee hours of Sunday morning a Greenpointer was the victim of a hit and run on Calyer Street between Newel and McGuinness Boulevard. The good news is the victim is alive, if in critical condition. The bad news is this is yet another example of how out of control speeding is around McGuinness Boulevard. You can read the whole sad story by clicking here.
My wishes go out to Mr. Chamberlain and his loved ones. May he make a complete recovery and the party responsible for this reprehensible act be brought to justice.
Miss Heather
P.S.: Special thanks goes out to Caryn Rose for bringing this to my attention.
UPDATE, 6:36 p.m.: Here is an email I have received regarding this incident. Anonymous writes:
My sister witnessed that hit and run. Or rather, her cab driver saw it all. She was heading back to NYC and said that it was a white car and the guy was pretty bad. They got out of the car and she said he was unconscious and bleeding from the head but that he was still breathing. They called 911 and flagged down a passing cop car… She said the cops were rather dismissive and said that the victim was drunk- they could smell it. She said “how do you know that? I had wine tonight!”…. I guess that if the victim is drunk that means he deserves to be mowed down!!… She said they didn’t seem interested in taking down names or statements either…. There is an outdoor surveillance camera outside the fabric store next to Dough de Damas. I wonder if the cops even checked that out???
– I am furious at the attitude of the cops.!!!
Reader Contribution Du Jour: Found In Greenpoint
While I usually disdain this kind of thing (exhortations to kill— be it the police or anyone else for that matter) I am posting this one because quite frankly the fact this missive has been inscribed on a discarded umbrella sort of undermines the message. “Gangsta” this most decidedly isn’t. Special thanks goes to Todd for forwarding this find (which hails from Greenpoint Avenue and Franklin Street.

New York Shitty Day Starter: Buy American
One would think that someone who has been sanctioned to take a 40 story megadump on Greenpoint’s waterfront could at least maintain his property. I guess not.
Dear Mr. Palin: I have always wanted to take a picture of this building. And thanks to your negligence I was able to get the photo I always wanted— before you tear it down and build a steaming pile of King’s Crap. Thank you.

Any questions?
As is often the case with some of the choicer finds in our fair ‘nabe this reminds me of a story. Methinks it was back in 2000 that a person I know, we’ll call him John, was experiencing a period of— how should I put it— enhanced recreational drug use. I’m not terribly sure what intoxicants loosened his inhibitions so as to do what I am about to tell you but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say cocaine and alcohol. I suppose the following goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway: I was not present when the following came to pass. While I do not care what people do in the privacy of their own homes there is some things I simply do not care to be around. I am too old for this shit. But I digress.
On one summer evening— no, make that morning— John had a bee in his bonnet. To assuage this he headed to the roof of his building (which was located on Green Street). He had something to say. And say it he did— while shooting both “birds” at Manhattan:
Fuck you, World Trade Center!
Fuck you, Empire State Building!
Fuck you, Chrysler Building!
And so on and so forth. Upon completing his mission John headed towards the stairs so as to go back to his abode. Little did he know that his digestive tract had other plans: his screed was punctuated by a copious stream of vomitus. After divesting himself he went downstairs (and presumably to bed). To his credit he got up bright and early and cleaned up the evidence of his misdeeds. One has to commend him for this act of neighborly/common courtesy.
If there is a moral to this story it is this: I find it strangely refreshing that even after ten years some things in the Garden Spot never change.
Damn.
