Now At 159 Greenpoint Avenue: Adelina’s

Today while running errands I spied a menu for this establishment and decided to swing by and see it for myself. Per the very nice barista on hand, they have been officially open for a couple of weeks.

While I cannot honestly say the fare is really my thing (although I do confess the bruschetta sounds enticing), it would be nice to see something finally take root here. As many of you recall a number of restaurants/bars have occupied this space rapid succession. Maybe this one will stick? Only time will tell I suppose. In any case the closing time of midnight will undoubtedly please its neighbors many of whom found its predecessor the Gypsy Bar— or more accurately the noise arising from thereof— an absolute nightmare. Non food-related tip/props: they have excellent air conditioning!

Two selections from Craigslist:

I keep posting ’em and little happens. I wonder why?

Quicklink, Part I: Gothamist Takes On The Times

The patchouli oil of Gen Y gentrification is scenting the air. A two-bedroom three-bath garden duplex on Russell Street recently sold for $772,000.

Is this because people who spent $700K on a duplex can’t afford to wash themselves with soap? You know, like people who use patchouli? And can we borrow some of it? (Not patchouli, money.)

Thank you, Christopher Robbins.

Parting shot from yours truly:

David J. Maundrell III, the president of aptsandlofts.com, the marketing agent for the 149 Huron Street Loft Condos (where perks include Brazilian teak finishes and a Zen garden), gazed approvingly at 200 Franklin Street, a two-story storefront that camouflages a set-back 12-story apartment tower jutting into the air like a solitary exclamation point. “This is what’s coming to Greenpoint,” he said. “This is the future.”

Well, the “future” not only merited its own poster (as seen above) but it won Curbed’s “Greenpoint Ugly-Off”  by a rather handsome margin.

P.S.: You can view the Times tome by clicking here. Those of you who are feeling impish might want to point out that the “new” five story building on Freeman Street (158 Freeman Street, to be precise) of which Mr./Ms. Finn writes is not exactly new…

and its ethically-challenged creator, none other than Robert Scarano himself, can no longer file plans with the Department of Buildings due to the creative license he took there. But who cares about ethics when there’s money— $3,500 a month for a one bedroom apartment— to be made! Nonetheless, it might behoove Mr./Ms. Finn to read/reference her own employer’s site.

She might learn something— I certainly did!

A person we’ll call “H” writes:

Greetings Heather,

I hope this message finds you well. I’m a resident of Greenpoint, and a fan of your blog. I noticed that you’d posted some notices recently about lost-dog ads around the hood. Was wondering if you might be able to do the same for an ad I posted on my street today about a lost iPhone and set of keys (which, believe it or not, I misplaced at separate times, neither while intoxicated!). I’m pretty sure I dropped both near my house. Anyway, let me know…

Done. If you have stumbled upon either of the above-listed items please contact “H” at the above-listed telephone number. It’s the right thing to do!

Everyone needs a hobby during the dog days of summer.

I have decided featuring a few of (the manifold number of) advertisements on Craigslist for the former “Sweater Factory Lofts” in this site will be mine.

As you can see there are quite a few of them.

Hmm…

After receiving a tip about— and later receiving a downright scary personal account from— the lady cyclist who was hit by a car at this intersection earlier this week, today I decided to see for myself exactly how the stop sign in question is obeyed. Or not— as you’ll see.

New York Shitty analysis:

  • Props go to the livery cab driver who pulled over to let the ambulance pass.
  • Otherwise, simply slowing down and peering around the corner does not a “stop” make.
  • Methinks some traffic enforcement is in order.

As luck would have it the Commanding Officer of the 94th Precinct— Deputy Inspector Hurson himself— spied me walking down Woodpoint Road shortly after I shot the above footage. He pulled over and we talked. I told him about what I saw at this intersection, noting the recent accident (of which he was familiar). Hopefully we’ll see some action here moving forward…

UPDATE, 9:34 p.m.: I informed the lady recovering from this accident, who we’ll call “C”, of my findings. Here’s what she had to say.

…thank you for putting my story w. the photo on new york shitty. a friend said she saw that i commented… i told her she was nuts… but then we figured it out!! i spoke to (Good Samaritan — Ed. Note), one of the guys that helped me. he was actually driving behind the guy that hit (me) and said he didn’t stop. he actually sped up!! (Good Samaritan) has photos and took notes!!…

To be continued…?
