Quicklink: G Is For Give Us Shuttle Bus Service!

Lincoln Restler, the co-author of this petition, writes:

In the wake of an unprecedented natural disaster, we are greatly appreciative of the MTA’s remarkable restoration of 84% of subway service. Yet we are extremely concerned about the lack of mass transit access for residents along the L and G subway lines. These trains are not redundant – but essential lifelines for hundreds of thousands of Brooklynites.

As we await the draining of these subway tunnels, we hope the MTA will swiftly expand bus service. We strongly suggest implementation of temporary shuttle bus service along the L and G routes to connect stranded residents to active subway lines.

Speaking as someone whose husband required three hours to get to work today*, I wholeheartedly concur. Sign it and share it, Greenpointers!

As opposed to our Mayor: his “commute” was a mere 25 minutes.

A Request From The Greenpoint Reformed Church

Ann Kansfield writes today, November 4, 2012 at 10:20 p.m.:

Could you please post this for me? Thanks. We just got a request from Councilman Brad Lander’s office: 400 lunches are needed for medically frail seniors staying in the shelter at the Armory. We need them delivered by 1pm. Here’s the plan: show up at the Reformed Church 136 Milton St. at 9am. If you can, please bring bread, fruit, beverages, etc. We’ll be working hard on this from 9 am to noon. At noon, we’ll pack them in my car and drive them over. For those of you staying up late, feel free to bake cookies, brownies, etc. and drop them off tomorrow morning. Pastor Ann is going to attempt to coordinate this, since Ann Carroll needs a break. So please, be patient with her. If anyone is good at organizing stuff like this, feel free to let her know and she’ll gladly put you in charge. Thanks for all the great work. Please forward this around as I’m a little worried we might not have enough volunteers since most folks are going back to work and it’s early in the day tomorrow.

Gladly posted. Thanks Ann!

And Now A Word From The MTA

That’s right Greenpointers: Crosstown Local service has yet to be restored.* Now factor in the East River Ferry will not be servicing the India Street Pier…

and, well, you get the idea. Plan accordingly, Garden Spotters!

*As it would happen I bumped into our City Councilman, Steve Levin, this morning. He was headed to the Church of the Ascension (which you may recall is operating a food drive for our friends in need as a result of hurricane Sandy). He too was less than pleased about about the state of mass transit hereabouts.

5 Days after Sandy, Rockaway Beach, NY

This image hails from Rockaway Beach and comes courtesy of the camera of Eric Lau Kwan Tai. Although I gave the following a mention on this site yesterday I will do so again: our very own 94th Precinct has an officer who calls Rockaway Beach his home. Per the Commanding Officer himself, Deputy Inspector Hurson, any and all who wish to do are encouraged to leave donations at the 94th Precinct for this fellow to distribute to families in need. Let’s do it, Greenpointers!

A lass named Laura writes November 3, 2012:

Hi Heather!

I just came home from helping a friend clean up after the storm. When I left the building I didn’t notice the bullet holes in both front doors of my building. Mike called the precinct at about 12:30 pm today to find out what the hell happened and why we weren’t told about it. Mike spoke to Detective Lopez who said someone came into our building and shot our doors. They don’t know who did it yet. We heard from neighbors that it happened at about 3-3:30 am. We’re mad as hell that the police didn’t ring bells and let tenants know. I’m all the way up on the 5th floor. And don’t always hear what’s going on downstairs. But my daughter often comes home from work in early morning hours and could have ended up as a victim. Detective Lopez said that the precinct can’t station a car out front to warn tenants. Duh! But they could have rung the bells!  Lopez told Mike, “I’m sure they did”. Well I checked with other neighbors on my floor, and none of their bells were rung. Furthermore, I was up and down in bed last night because once or twice I heard loud voices downstairs. So I would have heard my bell ring.

I don’t care what the 94th precinct says. Crime is escalating in N. Greenpoint. I personally want to know if this incident ends up as an actual report. Mike’s calling 311 right now. We’ll be calling our building’s managing agent on Monday to push for cameras in this building.

Yikes! This is as good a reason as any to remind everyone this month’s 94th Precinct Community Council meeting will come to pass this upcoming Wednesday, November 7th, at 7:00 p.m.

The very own head of the 94th Precinct writes:

Heather if anyone wants to donate food, clothing and baby stuff they can drop things off at the 94. One of my PO’s who lives in Rockaway will deliver them to needy families.

So there have you— and thanks Mr. Hurson!

And Now A Word From Our City Councilman

North ‘Pointers who want to lend a helping hand to our less fortunate neighbors please be advised of— and share— the following. City Councilman Levin writes:

Thanks to Rev. John Merz, our office is setting up a temporary satellite at Church of the Ascension at 122 Java St. Rami Metal will be there from 10-6 throughout the weekend and we are collecting donations to send to those in need of supplies in the Rockaways, Coney Island, Gerritsen Beach, Staten Island, Red Hook, and Downtown Manhattan. So far the response at our district office at 410 Atlantic Ave has been extraordinary, and we’re coordinating multiple trips every day (special thanks to the volunteers who has lent their cars) but it’s been very difficult for Greenpointers to get down here.

Donations that are particularly needed right now are:
-water
-non-perishable food, baby food
-toiletries
-towels
-clothing, baby clothing
-batteries
-work gloves
-diapers
-large garbage bags, cleaning supplies, basic tools

Rami can also help with Con Ed and small business issues and Congresswoman Maloney’s office has offered to help with FEMA, small business, and other issues as well…

Thank you Greenpoint/Williamsburg!

No, thank you Mr. Levin and Reverend “Pastor-in-Charge” Merz!
