New York Shitty Day Starter: A Thanksgiving Request From Reverend Merz

As many of you know John Merz of our very own Church of he Ascension has been working very hard to help families impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Now he needs our help. He writes:

Hi folks,

As you know we do a Thanksgiving dinner every year for local people in need as well as cook another 2 or 3 hundred for homeless veterans in Queens. The recent hurricane relief efforts have been amazing and one of the most stunning outpourings of generosity and compassion I have experienced. However what has happened is there is a dearth of volunteers. Usually at this point the email I set up for it is buzzing away. There is literally nobody checking in. I wanted to know if you can publicize the page created on facebook. You go to Ascension Hunger Program, like it and share posts.

You can also share our website which has info and a link to volunteer:

Volunteer opps are Monday through Wednesday in the evening (6.30 to 8 or so) and Then 8 to 7 Thanksgiving Day… Thanks in advance for sharing this info in your networks. I wouldn’t reach out if I didn’t need the help.

Yours,

John

Please take a little of your time this upcoming Thanksgiving and volunteer at this wonderful (and as I learned last year: fun) opportunity to meet some of your neighbors and help our community’s neediest. Oh yeah:  please spread the word!

A lass we’ll call “K” writes:

Hi-

For the last 3 years or so, there has been a recurring issue on Monitor St and enough is enough! Cars parked along Monitor, usually between Greenpoint Ave and Norman, close to the corner of Norman, are repeatedly being broken into. It’s always the same MO, the driver side window is smashed in and whatever loose change or valuables that are in easy reach is stolen. My brother-in-law’s car was hit last night… and it’s actually the second time. I’ve personally seen at least a dozen different cars that have been broken into in the same spot, in the same fashion. According to neighborhood gossip, the culprits are a group of kids that live in the area, only a block or two away. It’s time that the police address this problem. Nightly patrols past the area, better lighting and a security camera installed would go a long way. And if there are witnesses that can identify these kids, how are they still getting away with it?

I’d appreciate it if you could post and bring some attention to the problem.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, there will be no more 94th Precinct Community Council meetings this year (the one scheduled for this month was cancelled due to the nor’easter). However, I have forwarded K’s email to the head of the 94th Precinct, Deputy Inspector Hurson, so he is aware of the situation. In closing this is as good a time as any to remind everyone that regardless of where your vehicle is parked do not leave your valuables in plain sight where would-be thieves can see them. “Smash and grabs”, as they are known, are quite a problem here!

Mark Your Calendars: Transportation & Traffic Town Hall Meeting

That’s right folks: next week a host of our elected officials along with the Department of Transportation and our very own 94th Precinct will be conducting a transportation town hall meeting right here in Greenpoint. As you can see, our very own Boulevard of Death has received top billing on this rather intriguing agenda. Mark your calendars, be there and have your say Garden Spotters!

As some of you might recall, the 94th Precinct has an officer who resides in the Rockaways. Wishing to help their neighbors in need, our Finest are taking collections at their HQ at 100 Meserole Avenue. Here is what they need the most:

As of now, toys are not being collected. What is need are diapers, cleaning items and garbage bags.

As you will note Mr. Hurson states toys are presently NOT being collected. This was not a random bit of information on his part. Rather, it was in reply to an inquiry from yours truly. One which I am going to publish here. Very simply put, the proprietress of the Williamsburg Greenpoint News + Arts and myself are endeavoring to implement a toy drive. Our thinking is come next month there will be a LOT of children in our fair city who could really use some holiday cheer.

This project is very much in the works. Nonetheless, I am asking the following of you, gentle readers/fellow bloggers:

  1. We need goodies.
  2. We need businesses to serve as drop-off points for said goodies.
  3. We need help getting these goodies collected and dispatched. And most importantly of all:
  4. We need to know where to deliver said goodies!

Regarding the lattermost item: Obviously the Rockaways will be one— but surely there are other communities which have been overlooked? Anyone interested in helping with any of the above-listed points please shoot me an email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Please indicate “Toy Drive” in your subject line. Thanks!
