THIS WEEKEND: Handmade Holiday Craft Fair at 3rd Ward

2009 Handmade Holiday Craft

Soon enough Christmas will be upon us. For this reason those of you who are behind on your gift shopping (like me) should pencil in 3rd Ward’s annual Handmade Holiday Craft Fair this upcoming Saturday, December 12th! Among the items promised at this event are:

  • two floors teeming with crafts and culinary treats
  • live music
  • screenings of cult holiday classics
  • free coffee
  • delicious drinks, tasty treats and free workshops

It should also be noted that the first 300 guests will receive a free tote bag designed by Fernanda Cohen filled with goodies! Which brings me to this closing piece of advice: GO EARLY. This event gets packed very, very quickly. I speak from experience when I write this.

THURSDAY: Toby Comes to Dog Habitat

lefteyeJay Lombard of Dog Habitat tipped me off to this one. Who— or more accurately, what— is Toby, you ask? It is an organization which provides free spaying and neutering among many other things. Here’s their mission statement as gleaned from Toby’s web site:

The Toby Project will end the killing of tens of thousands of adoptable dogs and cats each year in New York City’s municipal animal shelters by preventing the births of unwanted dogs and cats.

We will make New York City a true “no-kill’ city by delivering free spay/neuter services to all five boroughs of New York City using mobile surgical vans specifically equipped for this purpose. By reaching out to targeted communities, our aim is to prevent the breeding of the very dogs and cats whose offspring account for most of the animals relinquished to our municipal shelters, where they are often killed.

The Toby spay/neuter van will be paying a visit to Dog Habitat this Thursday, December 10 at 8:00 a.m. sharp.

Do the right thing, dear readers: spay and neuter your pets. I may very well be a crazy cat lady, but the fact of the matter is I am not very crazy about the number of stray and malnourished cats I see in north Brooklyn (like the lovely lady gracing this post). It breaks my heart.

LAST GASP: Let It Snow…

(Sleet, Whatever…)

I don’t know about you but on days such as this I wish I had a fireplace to lounge around and roast some marshmallows. I have grown to accept this will probably never happen. No worries: James sent me some toasty carbecque porn to warm up my cold, wet bones.

He writes:

Thought you might enjoy. I saw this last Monday, but after your Tuesday post I got inspired to go take a few pics. Can you explain both cars’ proximity to fire hydrants?  And do you think Parts Express is going to get much business out of the owner of this crispy Chrysler? Metropolitan and Berry…

I don’t know on both counts, James, but one does have to appreciate “Anthony’s” entrepreneurial moxie. Perhaps someone will call him to pick up this charbroiled sedan given it has been in stasis for six days? One can only hope!

P.S.: Is that a take-out menu on the grill? If so, nice!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Much Ado About This Weekend

carynrose

Or would that be much to DO this weekend? If what I found in my inbox today is any indication there is a log going on this weekend. Mark writes:

Hey Miss Heather did you see this? Papacito’s is celebrating it’s pseudo-one year birthday and recently acquired liquor license. They’re inviting people to come celebrate with free food and tequila. Pretty cool!

Most cool indeed! Among the goodies promised are free tequila shots from 11:00 – 1:00 a.m. and live mariachi music. Check it out!

If mariachi is not your cup of tea, a good friend of mine (and fabulous D.J.), The Professor, will be spinning an evening of “Motor City rock, soul, punk and psycho-funk” at Greenpoint’s very own Boulevard Tavern. Having known the Professor for some time I can attest to his outstanding taste in music. Go. You will not be disappointed!

This item comes courtesy of my friends at the McCarren Dog Run. Tomorrow, December 5, from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. you can have your furkids photographed with Santa Claus — or would that be Claws? In any case, two 4 x6 inch prints will set you back a mere $20.00. Not a bad deal at all!

I don’t know about you, but I for one hope Edie the hamster will swing by and tell Santa what she wants for Christmas. She’s been a very good girl this year!
