From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: Southside Carbecque

My tipster, Enia (who took the above photograph), writes:
Hey Heather,
Not sure if you heard about this yet, or not, but it was pretty spectacular.
A Lamborghini BLEW UP on Rodney Street, which serves as the off-ramp for the BQE’s Metropolitan Avenue exit.
Here’s a picture of the FDNY putting it out. Insane.
According to some kids who got there before me, they saw two guys running from the car just before it blew up so they speculate it was stolen. We think the owner showed up just as FDNY was done putting it out.
Craziness: it’s not every day a $250,000 fireballs.
Indeed. So I suppose it goes in the “new” Williamsburg. Why roast something as pedestrian as, say, a Volvo when you can wreak a quarter million dollars of mayhem?

UPDATE, June 28, 2010: The folks at Jalopnik have ascertained this fire was started by a DVD player. One word: wow.

New York Shitty Slide Show Du Jour: Old Tymers Day

As I mentioned yesterday the folks at Phun Factory assembled a host of graffiti artists to give a hitherto largely unnoticed corner of the Garden Spot a paint job. Today I swung by several times to see how things were going. Follows is a slide show of highlights. Enjoy!

New York Shitty Street Seating Du Jour: Naugahyde With Benefits
Filed under: 11211, Bloomblight, Street Furniture, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
Okay, this specimen is not technically a street couch: I spied it through a peep hole in construction fence on Gerry Street. However, I felt the magnificent melange of material (including a broken figuring of the Virgin Mary) gracing said sofa merited a mention. Closing on a related note, I am pleased to announce there is a Flickr group dedicated to showcasing world-wide street seating. It is called Sofafree!! and it can be seen by clicking here.
Oh yeah, here’s my favorite of the lot. It hails from Vancouver.

This item was brought to my attention by my buddy across the creek, Queens Crap. Tomorrow starting at 9:00 a.m. the folks at the recently re-launched Phun Factory will be hosting Old Tymers Day: a collaborative project by over 50 graffiti artists from the 1960’s – 1980’s which will give North 15 Street and its environs a much-needed makeover! You can learn more about this event and Phun Factory by heading over to the latter’s temporary web site. Check it out!
