Ok, but any nominations for the L train stop you’d use to see New York *after* it was a city?
Mannahatta is a landscape ecologist’s simulation of New York City as it might have appeared to Henry Hudson when he sailed up the river in 1609. The ecologist drew from various sources, including a highly detailed survey of British defenses during the Revolution, as well as his own observations, in order to re-create the physical features that have been lost through 400 years of development. The result is a pretty nice looking book and an exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York (one of several commemorating the quadricentennial of Hudson’s journey) which does, despite some technical shabbiness, effectively provoke the imagination. The show will be up until October.
