I heard that he would meet people in the bars and then actually invite himself to that person’s home. That he was extremely in need of constant company when he got separated some years back.
I’ve heard similar such stuff. Fairly recently a guy came into the junk shop, a bartender from upstate (the Catskills if my memory serves me correctly) he had served Bill on a number of occasions and noted he was a mess. But a nice one. If my memory is correct this gent’s recollections of Mr. Murray are as follows (paraphrased):
He doesn’t give a shit. He’s successful and no longer cares… but he was clearly coming down from something. He turned to the guy next to him and asked: “How much did I do last night”. He said 1/8.
I hope he still has some street smarts.
