Friday Night In North Brooklyn

I planned on attending an art opening last night. What I got instead was an eye-opening experience.

BIG TIME.

What really got me was not the youths “acting out” or the cops who pursued them (undoubtedly because condo owners are getting pissed at their shenanigans); it was the snotty preppy dude (who can be seen in this video) saying (to his date):

This is awesome!

Is this how callous we (as a people) have become? Laughing at another human being’s misery, fear and (possible) death? But I suppose that’s the point of slumming.

Do I get a fucking t-shirt?*

Miss Heather

*Some days humanity in general makes me want to vomit. This was one of them.

  2. It really amazes me what some people think of as “awesome”. It’s usually some stupid out of towner that moves here thinking that they are going to act all “New York” or “Brooklyn”. I can’t stand that crap. I grew up here and don’t act like that at all.

  6. Being (literally) in the middle of all of this was pretty damned scary. It was not awesome in the least. That dude needed a good kick in the nuts (hopefully to prevent him from reproducing). Seriously.

  8. whenever i hear people reacting like that to the many horrible things that happen in this city (yes, even in hip north brooklyn), it makes me really upset. i moved here because i like it, but i’m hardly affluent. i’m a struggling artist (remember those?) and it kills me that luxury condos pop up on every block. i feel like wearing a sign that says “if you want to live in a condo, live in manhattan. stop making my rent skyrocket because you wanna feel ‘hood.”

  10. Wasn’t this just a bunch of kids fighting? What’s the big deal? It’s not awesome or horrible, it’s just kids fighting.

Also, those condos are lowering your rent. Especially when they turn rental. The intial phases of gentrification lead to the largest marginal increase in rent.

  12. It was most decidedly NOT just kids fighting. Trust me.

  14. Heather, it just is not all that clear from the post/video what happened. I can believe that it wasn’t just kids fighting, but in your post the only thing we see/read about is kids running around a cop cars showing up.

  16. What I did not put in that video (because I did not take a picture of them) were the chaps being arrested at Hayermeyer and South 4th. It was pretty clear to me (granted because I was present) that it was all connected.

In any case I would love to know what it was all about. The police do not bring out the helicopters for just anyone, you know.

Tell me what you're thinking...
