From The New York Shitty Inbox: Beware

Jay (who sent me the above photo) writes:
Future location of a pedestrian’s broken ankle. Corner of Newell and Nassau. 10 inches wide 3 feet deep… and growing.
While hardly the stuff of front page news it DOES touch upon something I have long intended but neglected to expound upon on New York Shitty. Namely, what does one due when he (or she) finds something like this in north Brooklyn? Call 311 ASAP. You will be given a complaint number. Write down this number and forward it along with a simple description of what you have reported to Community Board 1. This can be done quickly and easily via email at bk01 (at) cb (dot) nyc (dot) gov.
I realize this may seem like a lot of fuss over a paltry pot hole. But I would like to counter that although Jay saw this hazard in time to walk around it, someone else (especially a bicyclist) may not. Be a good neighbor: when you see something like this, call it in. It’s our community folks. Let’s watch out for each other!

Thank you for this info! I recently biked down Newell, and the whole street is in need of repaving.
Alternatively, 311 could pass that data on to community boards. Which CBs have been asking them to do since, oh, forever.
Can I also encourage you to take that 311 complaint number and call your elected officials to report it? If you have complained to 311 (this is key, 311 is complaint driven and is always the first step in this giant city where everything needs to get in line,) then staffers of your local assembly members, senators, & councilmembers can start fighting to get your problem fixed.
(And, on a side note, while this is true for all legitimate problems, including potholes, it goes double if you don’t have heat. Call, get a complaint number, call your elected and they will get inspectors out to your house as soon as they can. It’s cold out there this weekend, just thought I’d mention it.)
Keep up the good work!

YES, danielle! Joe Lentol’s office in particular is top notch when it comes to constituent services. I speak from experience. Here’s the link to his contact page:
Just reported the cave-in — it’s not considered a pot hole — and requested that the whole street from Driggs to Nassau be repaved. I recently rode my bike down that section, and the whole street is pitted from the salt put down from December’s snowfall. The e-mail confirmations will be forwarded to CB1 upon arrival.
Good show, citizen rutila!
