Greenpoint Gentrification Watch: Two Flags R.I.P.

It would appear that one of my favorite bits of Greenpointiana has finally succumbed to luxurification. Per the Department of Buildings web site they’re renovating the interior (which is purported to be a restaurant). So long, Two Flags. It was nice to know you. No matter what happens you’ll always be the “Doof Center” to me.

wow, people used to live in that space. they were friends of beatrice’s, I believe. they had that cool FULL WALL fan setup that went in front of the doors in the summer.

it is nice to see the old retail spaces reclaimed on franklin but this space makes me sad to see go.

I lived there once upon a time, when Two Flags was still a deli. The woman next door was a mezzo-soprano who wore coat tails and a top hat and the landlord would always show up in sweats all slouched over like he was decrepit and suffering and then one day he shows up in some patagucci gore tex outfits, standing a full foot taller and announces that he’ll be gone for two months because there’s a mountain on the Korean border that has been opened for climbing by international truce and he can’t pass up the opportunity since it has been a lifelong dream to scale it. After that, he stopped pretending he was too weak to change a lightbulb, which was kind of nice.

I was still vegan back then and never especially inspired by the stews they served downstairs but the mail carrier stopped in for lunch every day. Two Flags closed right around the time that I moved out and the couple who moved in after me changed their old sign to DOOF.

Heather, it looks as if maybe, just maybe, they’re keeping the signage above the windows.

An artist and friend, Tim Hailey, lived there for about 6 years. He was the composer of such signs as “Doof Center” and “Tree Fort” depending on his mood. The landlord kicked him out at the end of March with the idea of putting in a restaurant, which I heard first was going to be Korean BBQ/sushi place, then Asian-fusion and now he has told Beatrice that it’s going to be a “small plate” restaurant.

I can’t get over what they’ve done with the interior space. It looks nice, but I miss Tim being there.

“Small plate” restaurant? WTF? At least it isn’t an Asian fusion place or Korean BBQ…

I think he’s trying to figure out what trendy restaurant-speak words will make him a lot of $$$.

Even with all the new snazzy light colored wood paneling, I don’t think its going to be easy to eat in Tim’s old bedroom or kitchen (where the shower used to be!) Sweetwater Restaurant still kind of grosses me out!
